Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi guys,

I'm Carys, I'm 27 and after abusing my body for 16 years, I have now come to the realization that I need to accept my diabetes and I'm ready for a new start.

Thought I'd join this site to get some much needed support 🙂 I want to get better, healthier and give myself the chance to reverse the effects of what I have done to myself.

I've had so many laser eye operations for my advanced retinopathy since 2006, still suffer the bleeds and I haven't felt healthy for as long as I can remember.

Any help with getting back on track would be amazing, I just want to get my body back to how it was, feel healthy.

I have never accepted my diabetes, my whole adult life I haven't followed the rules. I hate diabetes, I hate it with every inch of my body, but I know I have to change.

I hope you are all well 🙂

Carys

Hi Carys. Welcome 🙂

Firstly. Well done for joining and realising it's a battle against your own body you've been fighting.

Diabetes isn't a separate entity inflicted upon us. It is a part of us and just the way our bodies are.

But the words are easy to write down and not always easy to accept.

Hopefully, we can help you to understand it better and maybe feel more in control of it, or at least learn how to react to it in a healthier way.

What sort of regime are you on btw ie. insulins, MDI, pumping, etc ?

Hi Carys, welcome to the forum 🙂 It's good to hear that you want to take control of your diabetes and learn how to manage it well, and we will help all we can, so don't be afraid to ask as many questions as you like. I would highly recommend getting a copy of Type 1 Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Young Adults by Ragnar Hanas. It will explain everything you need to know about living with Type 1. Well, maybe not everything, but for those things it doesn't, you have us! 🙂

Might be worth asking your doctor to do an HbA1c test so you have a starting reference point. I'd also recommend starting a food and blood sugar/insulin diary - be as detailed as you can, and this will hopefully help you to identify areas where things might be improved and patterns in your control.

Looking forward to hearing more from you! 🙂

Welcome Carys - you've come to the right place. The guys on here are fantastic.... Amanda x 🙂

Welcome to the forum Carys 🙂

Hi and welcome Carys.

Perhaps the most help you could get, in addition to this board, would be an education programme. Some areas off DAFNE (Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating) or other aconyms. If your area doesn't, or had long waiting lists, ypu might like to try an online course eg http://www.bdec-e-learning.com/

Hi Carys a warm welcome to the forum from me x
