Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
I'm a terrible diabetic I eat sweets I smoke and drink I rarely test blood I am starting to worry about problems now I've had type 1 for 28 years do any fellow diabetics want to chat with me?

Hi jpgonzalez, welcome to the forum 🙂 Are you worried about problems because you are already starting to suffer from them, or that you might if you don't do something now? Have you been on a diabetes education course, such as DAFNE or BERTIE? Even though you have been diagnosed a long time, you may benefit from a 'refresher' to bring you up to date. Many people who have been diagnosed a long time often seem to be left to their own devices because it is assumed that they must 'know everything', but things are changing all the time.

Please feel free to ask any questions or share your concerns here - there are lots of people who have found themselves where you are now, and hopefully sharing experiences will help you to turn things around.

Welcome to the forum. Of course we would like to talk to you🙂

hello jpgonzalez, of course we want to talk to you !.
you have taken the time to sign up to this forum and I think that's great !

Hello and welcome to the forum 🙂. There's no such thing as a bad diabetic! But if you think you have been leading an unhealthy lifestyle, maybe joining this forum is a first step to change all that? There's no reason why you shouldn't enjoy a drink or some sweets now and again (do you test your levels and take your insulin?). But maybe you could make this month your "Stoptober" and give up the ciggies?

No such thing as a 'bad diabetic'. Just people living with diabetes the best way they can and battling against the ridiculous, annoying inconsistencies of this silly condition!

If you can make some tiny improvements to the way you are managing it each day then you are on to a winner as far as I'm concerned, but sometimes we all feel like we are trying to run up the down escalator!

Welcome from me........

My wee brother fits the exact same profile as you, even the length of time diagnosed.......

He is on 2 injections of mixtard a day.......

What about you........?

You have done the right thing joining up....just chatting with other diabetics can really motivate you........

welcome to the forum, I have found it brilliant and useful, even if you don't acually say anything reading what other folks say if inspiring.🙂

Hi Bad Diabetic, join the Club!

It's fairly exclusive Club as I too am a Social Pariah, not for having T1 at all ... for still smoking!

No it isn't good for me - or you, or anyone except possibly the Tax coffers, but there again as we go to Belgium to get our baccy, it doesn't even profit the Government. So how EXTRA WICKED is that then ? 😱 :D

If it's any possible consolation, nothing of mine has actually dropped off or ceased to function properly yet - but there again a few years ago I was actually having a complete nervous breakdown and the life that surrounded me was so full of stress, I honestly thought I would land up in a padded cell. (or at the wheel in a car wrapped round a tree, not much to choose between em really)

But I managed to figure out that there WAS just ONE thing in my life that I jolly well should be able to control - and that thing was my BG !

They DO assume we ought to know everything - and we don't.

I badgered my local NHS till they got me on a Carb Counting course and WOW! Changed my life. Since then I've also got meself an insulin pump and (I think) I'm managing pretty much OK.

I'm not saying it's easy, cos it ain't, if anyone EVER says D is easy they are lying. But hell, if I can do it, in that state - then I reckon you can too!

Give it a bash. Just do it ONE day at a time until it becomes as much a habit as $0??ing nicotine ........
