Hi Guys,

I was just wondering how illness and stress effects BG readings, if at all?

I havent been well the last few weeks and my anxiety is pretty bad, during this period my BG levels have been really high. Last night I got 11.4 which was quite scary, I wasn't expecting it after what I had eaten and it took hours and hours to go down, I was too worried to go to sleep until it had came down and was just wondering of illness and anxiety can effect the readings?

Hope you are all well.

Thank you in advance xx

i fell ill after xmas and my BG levels went crazy and at one point crashed out, hypo. they went from hyper to hypo.

Illness (and recovery from injury) have a pretty solid reputation for raising BG levels. Stress and anxiety can also cause releases of ‘stress hormones’ like cortisol and adrenaline which promote the release of stored glucose.

But as @mikeydt1 says, it’s not always so straightforward, and sometimes BG can go down instead of up!

“Sick day rules” help people with T1 increase their insulin doses to help keep BG in the normal range.

There are also sickday rules for people with T2 from My Diabetes My Way in Scotland
