Hiya All
I'm suffering a bit with a sick/cold virus thing. BG very high (between 9 and 14) and I feel rubbish. I'm following sick day rules and have no keytones but I am easily doubling my quick acting at meals and my lantus is up from 7 to 10 units. No sign yet of any improvement and I've been ill for over a week. Is this normal? What can I expect as I start to get better?

Sorry to hear you are poorly

So sorry to hear you are poorly. I'm a bit new at this so cannot offer any kind of medical advice, but perhaps can cheer your spirits. I didn't know we had to have sick day rules. I'm so bad at this diabtese lark, p'raps I should send it back - do you think Amazon would refund my diabetes??!!!! I shall make a plan today for when I am sick. When I feel poorly, I like to have a nice, healthy bowl of soup. I was just rattling on earlier, how I like to make my own. I think my favourite has to be carrot. Soooo easy to make too. Mind you, if you feel really rough, you probably could do without making anything. I don't know where you are, but a nice dose of fresh air might help you breathe more easily. That's probably not such a good idea either though, when you feel rubbish. I reckon, a nice couch, a snuggly blanket, a pet doggy or cat if you have one, (or borrow a neighbours), a glass of hot water with a lump of lemon to either drink or sniff, box of tissues & some old black & white movies!

Ta for the kind words. I'm going for the snuggly blanket film approach for this afternoon.
I'm sure you'll be told about sick day rules soon. Usually your blood glucose readings go up when you are ill and you may need to change your medication if you are on any. You also need to drink plenty to stay hydrated. Things are a little differnt for type one's as we can get a condition called diabetic ketoacidosis (might be the wrong spelling) if our blood glucose is very high for a period of time and this needs urgent hospital treatment.

Thanks for the info & explanation. Keep drinking that water, afterall, you will get lots of exercise running to & from the loo!! Enjoy your film. x

with no ketones you should be taking 10% of your total daily dose every 4 hours..........that's the DAFNE rules anyway..............

does this sound familiar..............?

Hiya, spookily that is about what I am doing, I've not done a DAFNE course as its not available in my area and have only been diagnosed for 5 months.

I think the sick day rules are pretty much the same across the board, basically designed to manage ketones if/when you cant hold anything down........

Get well soon..........:D

Sorry to hear you are feeling grotty pgc.

Keep up the fluids and test lots (BGs and for ketones).

Be aware too that once you start coming out of the illness you will need to gradually rein in those extra insulin doses. Watch out for hypos during that period as it can be tricky to know exactly where on the 'recovery curve' you are.

Ta. Sounds like I'm on the right track. Any idea how long the high readings will last? Do levels gradually fall or is it a one off drop?

hope you're feeling better soon pgcity.

like the others say, test bloods and for ketones regularly and just keep an eye on when your levels start to come down.

hopefully you'll start feeling better any day now!

Can we get together and cry on each others shoulders? I hope you feel better soon

Ta for all the good wishes. Patience for the next few days then. How does everyone manage with work when they are ill? I feel like a zombie because of the high bg readings and have already had a week off.

Only been off work when I had the FLU last year, the first and hopefully the last time...............

If I cant eat or move then it time to stay at home, otherwise, just enjoy the day at work..............:D

No way I can manage at the moment. I need to toughen up cos I'll end up losing my job if I have 2 weeks off everytime I am ill. I would normally be fine at work if I was ill but I just cant think and have no energy when I'm high. I don't think I've got the hang of it all yet.

One of the disadvantages of diabetes...........

Hang in there.........🙂
