IFG or IGT?

Hi all. Went for my annual check today but have come away a bit confused. Would like some advice before I go back to see dr on 9th Nov. Last year I had a FBG test and an OGTT. I also had an HbA1C. I knew nothing about numbers etc (because I hadn't met you then!) so didn't bother to ask what the numbers were. Today I asked, because now I understand the numbers a bit better and also because I want a benchmark to compare results. Last year my FBG was 6.4, my HbA1C 6.2 and my OGGT result 5.8. My diagnosis then was IGT. However, I though an OGGT below 7 would mean I had IFG? My question is a) is this right? and b) does it all amount to the same thing really? I also had a trace of glucose in my urine (+1) this time even though it was an early morning, pre-breakfast sample. So now I am a little concerned. Any thoughts on any/all of this? I know there is no point in worrying as this won't alter the result, but am interested to know what you think. Thank you. Katie

What do you mean your OGTT was 5.8 ?
The important results on an OGTT are at the start and then at the two hour mark.

IGT is a bg between 7.8 and 11.1 at the two hour mark.

I assume at the 2 hour mark as my fasting bg was done on the same day and that was 6.4. The nurse did say it was a 'normal' reading and that a high reading was anything over 5.9. This is why I asked the question on here as I was confused too!

I'd be tempted to ask her to confirm what exactly the results where in relation to.

The only thing that I can think is that the 5.8 was the delta from the fasting. But since the limit is generally assumed to be 11.1 then that doesn't make sense. 6.4 + 5.8 = 12.3

Although, 11.1 is a "general limit". The actual limits differ from lab to lab and therefore it's possible that they might have a higher limit (but I though this was all standardized).

Lots of if's and but's here. So I'd try squeeze them to be a bit more precise with the information they give you.
