The NHS is so unsafe that if it were an airline “planes would fall out of the sky all the time,” the chairman of the inquiry into the Mid-Staffs scandal has warned.

In an interview with The Telegraph, Robert Francis QC said the public had been given a falsely positive impression about the quality of care being provided in many of the country’s hospitals.

The barrister said the NHS needed to make radical changes to meet the needs of the public - instead of simply blaming patients for “crowding out” Accident & Emergency (A&E) because they did not know where else to turn.

Mr Francis said that for too long, those in charge of the health service had
become “complacent” about the care meted out to patients, believing it was reasonable for some patients to be badly failed, as long as the majority were not harmed.
