I am diagnosed as prediabetic and will be starting on Living well programme. Any ideas on how to plan a weight loss diet please
 
As you are prediabetic, would it not be better to concentrate on getting lower blood glucose levels?
I found that excluding high carb foods from my diet resolved my type two diabetes, but after a while I realised that I had lost almost 50lb from the last time I weighed myself, when I was eating a high carb diet in order to lower cholesterol as instructed by my doctor. It had caused me to become almost spherical over the course of a few years.
 
Hi @Patou and welcome to the forum from a fellow type 2 🙂 As @Drummer says,cutting down/out carbs is a good way to lower your blood sugar and to lose weight. When I was diagnosed I carried on eating "normal" meals, but without potatoes, rice, bread or pasta, and it's now a way of life where I'm rarely hungry. To compensate for the lack of potatoes etc, I have extra veg such as broccoli or green beans. To be fair I also have smaller portions as I'm calorie counting in addition to going low carb.

I've just bought myself a pair of size 12 jeans for the first time in around 15 years and although they are snug, they do fit! It's worth me giving up all those chips and bread to go from a size 20 to 12, and my blood glucose is now below diabetic levels.

Do you know what your results were that led to you being told you were at increased risk of diabetes? Do you know how close you are to an HbA1c of 48 which is usually used as the diagnostic cut-off for diabetes?

And how much weight are you looking to lose?

A very practical and simple initial step can be to just keep a ruthlessly honest food diary, noting down all the meals, drinks, and snacks, along with a count of how much total carbohydrate is in each.

Total carbs are much more useful than ‘of which sugars’ because all carbohydrate turns into glucose in the bloodstream, and by noting which meals or snacks are most likely to be raising your BG the most 🙂
 
Hi Patou, I have recently become pre diabetic too. I have gone low carb and managed to reduce my HbA1c in 6 weeks from 49 to 44. I am hoping it is now lower still as have now lost 1 stone in weight.
I have cut out potatoes, pasta, rice and replaced with cauliflower mash or rice and celeriac mash or chips etc. I count carbs and calories using an app which really works for me.

Wife was in same position, diagnosed prediabetic.

Last November joined Slimming World group, it focusses on reduced calories while adapting lifestyle changes to diet to maintain weight loss, she lost 5 stone & is no longer prediabetic & feels all the better for it, diet isn't really restrictive & she enjoys occasional treats without piling on pounds.

Prof Roy Taylors Newcastle Diet focusses on calorie restriction to lose visceral fat on organs like pancreas, this is to reverse prediabetes & for those newly diagnosed diabetic, look it up or ask Dr about it.
 
As I've posted before on other Threads, nothing in the body happens in isolation, and things like weight, blood pressure, diabetes, cardiovascular problems, and cholesterol levels are all interconnected

As mentioned in the earlier replies, if you change your diet to low carb and also cut out stuff like burgers, pizzas, other fried food, and processed & junk food in general then your pre diabetes, weight, and general health will improve.

This would mean no more, or very greatly reduced, bread, pasta, spuds, rice, cakes, biscuits, sweets, booze, and more veg, salads, olive oil, fish, especially oily fish, and all the rest of the healthy stuff we hear about

Making the changes can be daunting and difficult at first, but as you do it, so you do more, and it just becomes a new & different way of living
Your taste will change, and you will no longer want to have things that are very sweet, fatty, or salty

Have a look through old Threads, especially Newcomers, Food & Carbs, and Weight Loss. There is a lot of information and your questions will almost certainly have been asked before

And if you have any more questions, or want encouragement & reassurance, ask again
