Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Saw this online and wondered what others thought of it?

If it is addressed to all diabetics, regardless of Type then I would say, as a Type2 on diet and exercise only, then a lot of the menus would have me in double figures. Examples that would be a no no include mashed potatoes and fruit juices. I obviously cannot speak for a Type1 or 1.5

Anything based on the 'eatwell plate' is going to be a disaster for T2s, especially on D&E. 🙄

EDIT: Oh for goodness sake! Week 1. Monday. Breakfast. A glass of orange juice... Aaaaaaaaahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!

That would spike me to high heaven, especially in the morning! Also, they suggest grapefruit juice - bad for levels and also, given that many people with diabetes are on statins, not a good idea :(

followed by grapefruit juice on tuesday.

how many diabetics are on statins ? 🙄

they're incompetant to say the least.

it's remeniscent of the sort of menu given out 20-30 years ago.

it does make you wonder what planet they're on.🙄

I'm not sure that these are particularly useful for anyone really, the carb counts vary greatly in the meals and across the days so not even any good for a type 2's on mixed insulin even.

I was quite surprised because these are the guys who are very pro- animal insulins and I thought they were low carb fans, obviously not looking at this. I must have muddled them up with another group.

I quite like the menu, it would suit me, as for the fruit juice dilemma I would just alter my insulin dose. The only problem with the juice is that I would want to drink more than the recommended amount lol.. When I was changed to Rosuvastatin the dietician informed me that I can drink grapefruit juice as it has no effect on the drug.

"MANAGEMENT: Patients receiving therapy with atorvastatin, lovastatin, simvastatin, or red yeast rice (which contains lovastatin) should be advised to avoid the regular consumption of large amounts of grapefruits and grapefruit juice (the manufacturers of simvastatin and lovastatin advise against ingestion of greater than 1 quart per day). Pravastatin and fluvastatin are metabolized by other enzymes and may be preferable alternatives in some individuals." from http://www.drugs.com

1 quart [US, liquid] = 1.665 348 369 3 pint [UK]

This site gives a list of drugs that interact with grapefruit..

Way too much reliance on potato and bread to be a good 'menu plan' for anybody IMHO - pasta and rice only included once or twice a week and bread in some form for lunch nearly everyday ( cant we eat pasta before dark now:confused:)And whats with all that mashed potato? Not a heathy eating plan we will be following in this house, I'm afraid😱

Who would bother to cook and eat 1 tablespoon of Pasta? thats about 5 pieces of Penne😱

It's also not a maintainable diet. The calorie totals seem to be mostly between 1000 kcal and 1400 kcal. The recommended daily male intake was 2500 (yes I know it's gone up a bit) so that means another 1100 to 1500 kcals that have to come from somewhere. That's an awful lot of snacking!

i thought that too mark. even for someone as lithe and slender as my good self ! 😉:D

Having trouble loading the link so can't view, is the IDDT not aimed at solely at those using insulin such as type 1's? I've heard of them and understand that IDDT stands for Insulin Dependent Diabetic Trust which would mean the food advice is for insulin users which many type 2's are not. Other than that its difficult to comment without viewing the menu.

It's a pdf file - so you might need acrobat reader (or compatible) to read it. Does this link work any better? http://www.iddt.org/publications/diabetes-everyday-eating/

I'll let someone else comment on the numbers of Type 2's on insulin vs the numbers of Type 1's on insulin :D But your essential point is correct, yes it would spike a Type 2 on D&E (or Met only), but then it's not intended for such a person.

I'm surprised that they have completely missed out healthy nuts (walnuts, hazelnuts, etc), not even mentioning it in moderation due to the caloric value.

It looks like you would have to use pretty high doses of insulin to cover some of those meals as well!

Thanks I've finally got it to load. Looking at the menu I still think it isn't geared towards type 2's as there are too many carbs per meal which would be fine for most type 1's, struggling to find where it says it's suitable for all diabetics:confused: does this publication go out to everyone regardless of type and means of control?.

Orange juice for breakfast and mashed tatties for tea would send my bg sky high, OJ is fine for hypo's but this is the only time I drink it.

you get the feeling they've cobbled some old fashioned general dietary advice together and assumed it can all be covered by insulin without so much as a nod to GI.

i'm sure they're proud of it though. And potentially, a lot of dieticians would find nothing wrong with it which is scary in itself.
