Historical recipe books have been searched and digistised by The Wellcome Trust; discussed here by historian Sara Pennell on this morning's "Today" programme.

See also http://www.wellcomecollection.org/whats-on/events/recipes-and-remedies.aspx for information about the Recipes and Remedies series of events. The Wellcome Collection, on south side of Euston Rd, London, east of Euston railway station and west of St Pancras / Kings Cross, is free to enter, and has permanent exhibitions as well as temporary exhibitions and special events.

Could also fit into In The News, Events, Off the Topic etc, but decided on Food & Recipes section, even though ambergris is difficult to get hold of (can be found floating in the sea, so not necessary to kill sperm whales to obtain) 🙂

Is that the same Wellcome as was the Foundation? - they used to make my insulin !!!

Henry Wellcome (1853 - 1936) made his money through his family pharmaceutical business and founded Wellcome Trust (charitable foundation) in 1936, when his wishes expressed in his will were carried out by trustees - this supports many health research projects as well as public engagement such as Wellcome Collection.

Wellcome Burroughs pharmaceutical company continued to develop and manufacture medicines etc through World War II. It is now part of Glaxo Smith Kline, which was formed in 2000, from amalgamation of Glaxo Wellcome and Smith Kline Beecham.
