Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi - I'm Ian1962. i am type 2 diabetic, and was first declared such in 2006. I live in Wiltshire. I am 55 years old, and via other issues have stress management problems and high cholesterol. I am 106 Kgs which is 6 Kgs more than when I was racing long distance traithlon until 2012.

For a while through vast quantities of exercise for triathlon training (15-20 hours a week) by diabetes was very much under control. Then in 2012 I had to have a total hip replacement and I was banned from running. Subsequently cycling long distance has proved uncomfortable. I still swim, and look to swim long distances too, but find pool swimming not only tedious in the extreme (I prefer open water) but available sessions are just not convenient - let alone long enough (50 minutes at our local pool which is just about a warm up). I quite like walking but there are issues there with the hip still, and finding "time" is another issue; now I can no longer exercise to the degree I enjoyed, I am involved in local am-dram and choral societies which take up three evenings a week, plus I coach rugby which is an evening and sunday morning each week, plus a full time job albeit mainly working at home. i also have two self employments that fit in around al;l that though their impact is not that many hours a week.

Since 2012 my stats have all got steadily worse. I am maxxed out on metformin and the next step is injections. I live in a household of 5 including myself, all of which have differeing dietary needs - one vegetarian, a second vegetarian that doesn't like mushrooms, tomatoes, salad, a vegan (that doesn't like mushrooms and nuts), a committed carnivore and myself a carnivore/omnivore. The prospect of putting at a minimum two types of meal on a table at the same time, let alone three potentially (or five!) is just beyond complicated. Notwithstanding we all work/study so nobody is able to spend much preparation time. Its not uncommon anyway that if I don't cook nobody cooks.

I have been offered a diabetics "course" to help me prepare better - but its only available on a Monday for three hours on an afternoon in a town 20+ minutes drive each way; i'm a working man, its not feasible.

I'm at a bit of a crossroads in my life and need to make changes. it seems to me that just lumbering on the way I am is not a solution. But I don;t see workable options to alter much.

I've decided that as a starter i will just have to look after my own food - my own shelf in the fridge etc. I'm not convinced this is feasible to be honest but its a starting point.

I have looked at the diet plans etc on this site and while they are an excellent start, I really don;t see that they can always help - what's the point of a 4 person recipe when nobody else may eat it anyway? I could do with "plan for one only" and use that, and which doesn't involve recipes for two, or four and expectations that everybody else will want to eat what I will.

I suspect the above sounds like a self pity rant. Its not intended as such. Its a brain dump of the reality in which i live. I cannot be alone.

Hi Ian1962, welcome to the forum 🙂 I'm afraid I can't help much with the food issue, I'm fortunate in that I only need to consider my own needs. I can see that trying to cater for 5 such disparate regimes must be a problem. Might it be possible to batch cook meals for yourself and freeze them? This is what I have always done, long before my diagnosis - cook once and eat many times! 🙂 I made a big pan of chilli the other day, had one portion and froze 7 other portions - you can do the same for many other meals, like curry, bolognese etc. 🙂 Let the others learn to cook and pull their weight! 🙂

Very sorry also to hear about the problems caused by the hip, it must be very frustrating for you after being so fit and active :(

cheers Northerner - appreciate your reply :D

yeah - batch cooking and freezing is one part of a solution but is only going to cover a very few meals a week. I suppose I'm just a tad disappointed that the diet plans presume that a whole family is going to join in with what is available for the diabetic. 4 portions of bean and mushroom enchilidas will see two of them ignored, and by the vegan especially who doesn't like beans and mushrooms ! The carnivore just wouldn't go there anyway. I suppose I'll just try to scale it down to 1 portion - but my experience is that this rarely works!

However I do appreciate you are only trying to help 🙂

Hi Ian, welcome to the group....

I'm quite fortunate that, though I live in a household of 5, 3 of them are dogs & eat whatever I give them.... As for my wife & I, we are on Low Carb so I pretty much cook "normal" meals but without the sources of carbs (like starchy vegetables, rice, wheat products etc) therefore very flexible

Welcome Ian ! I am a 63 baby with the same name. It got my attention straight away (your post). Sorry to here about your probs with exercise. It sounds like you have been busy being fit & well done for that 😎 Ps I have been T1 since 1966 & don't know any other type of living than Diabetes but it will not stop me. 🙂

Hi Hobie... yes... circa 2009/2010 ,y resting heart rate was about 38. My blood pressure was marginal refer to GP for LOW pressure but the gym tutor knew me and understood it was a reflection of my fitness levels. The anesthetist for my hip replacement operation told me I was the fittest person he had seen aside form elite athletes. I was still very much the prop forward I'd been for the previous 30 years too 🙂 the inability to sustain anything like that level of exercise has been the hardest thing I think.

Hello Ian1962, welcome to the forum 🙂 personally I think it's every man for himself. 🙄

Good luck with things Ian.

How old are the others in your household? We are only 3 in our household, 1 who is a dustbin and will eat anything, 1 vegan and me the fussy eater who is diabetic.

My daughter who is vegan cooks mainly for herself though she always offers myself and OH and depending on what it is we take her up on offer. She uses her leftovers for lunch, dinner etc. next day.

If I cook it's usually a vegan meal we can all eat or a non vegan meal for myself and my hubby.

I've always made Bolognese, chilli and cottage pies etc. with veggie mince (not quorn as quorn has egg in) so these are meals we all eat. When my daughter was young and fussy on what veg she ate I simply blitzed them with blender and added as sauce to above. I can eat Bolognese, chilli and cottage pie I just reduce carbs so either have carb free pasta, rice with first two or just have a big bowl full. Cottage pie I add cauliflower to mash and spread it thinly on one half of pie which I eat.

I view it that I have to have a diet that is kind to my diabetes so I prioritise myself. My hubby and daughter can eat what they want so if they don't like what I'm having then they can look after themselves.

You prioritise yourself.

the carnivore won't touch a veggie mince anything.
the vegan won't touch quorn anything, nor beans, mushrooms
veggie son won't touch mushrooms, tomatoes
veggie wife doesn't really like mushrooms.

Yes - its a PITA. The reality is that often if anybody doesn't want what is served they sort themselves out - they are all adults now as of last weekend. My worry is that I know the three adult children will just eat **** if something is not prepared for them. Veggie son will "cook" - which means veggie burgers or bacon sandwich. vegan daughter may cook tomatoes on toast, or pasta. Carnivore son may cook beans on toast. that is the limit to their culinary abilities it seems. its not through want of trying. I don't get it. Otherwise they exist on cereal or doritos, or sandwiches/toast. i despair.

TBH I do now cook for me, with a variation for my wife's vegetarianism. the "kids" can have it or not - their call. they are also just as likely to say "not hungry" and not eat. "not hungry" was child speak a decade ago for "I don't want to eat that but i can't say I don't want to eat that so i say i am not hungry and I will not be forced to eat it" and now I dunno if that is still the case or not. Frankly they **** me off food wise. I was not the parent with the qualification in children's development so i kept schtumm.

As long as whatever is cooked is of the meat and two veg type approach then carnivore son will eat. this week i've just avoided carbs mainly (bread, potatoes, rice and pasta anyway) and had the meat/fish with veggies/salad and its worked with spuds for son. (Other veggie son is away at Uni).
I desperately need some professional guidance and it's just not there. My line is IT support - I feel the "service" I am getting is rather like somebody coming to me with a problem with their computer, and me saying "yes, your PC has a bad virus and some hardware issues. There is a guy 30 minutes away who can fix it on a Sunday morning at 3am. Bye." Or "yes your PC has a problem. don't connect it to the internet and don't turn it on"

I apologise that I seem probably quite bitter here. I'm just very, very, very frustrated, and trying to juggle my latent parental providence with what i need.

cheers for listening
