Hi everyone, just recently been given the answer to a question I have been asking for the last 3 years to many different doctors. Started on the Metformin last week which has definitely improved my quality of life a lot but going to sleep is a bit difficult .

Welcome @Tezza1664
That is not the present you wanted but at least you have an answer to the three year question.
There are quite a few of us LADAerians around in the forum. When they come back, I am sure the others will bombard you with questions in order to provide helpful advice. I prefer to tell you we are here to help and attempt to answer any more unanswered questions based on our combined hundreds of years of experience.

The treatment for LADA is insulin. I have heard of others who start on Metformin. However, I thought it was best to give your insulin producing cells some respite by starting with low level insulin as soon as possible. I think I read this from @Inka who has done some research in this area. (Apologies Inka if I have this wrong.)
One important thing for someone newly diagnosed is not to be afraid of insulin - today we have the tools to make this easier than the olden days of scart syringes.
Another useful thing is Libre. If you are living in England, your LADA diagnosis entitles you to this.
But, the most important thing is not to expect perfect numbers all the time. There are many things that can affect our blood sugars that we cannot live a full life at the same time as doing the job of a human organ (the pancreas), all day every day.

Thank you helli, I’m seeing the doc again in a few weeks to discuss the next stages. At this moment in time I am just thankful that someone has worked out the problem and is making steps towards improving my quality of life. So far so good.

Welcome to the forum @Tezza1664 . From another late starter with T1(LADA). I am glad that you have found us and that you can now tap into a wealth of experience and support to help you manage your T1.

I know that some people with T1 have Metformin added to the mix of meds, but as a T1 you will need insulin. This will help you to manage your glucose levels and protect the remaining beta cells (the ones that make insulin) that you have. It is recommended that you start straight onto using two different insulins, one to deal with the glucose your liver secretes to keep you ticking over (basal insulin) and another to deal with the glucose that comes from the carbs that you eat. This gives you the most flexibility, and may seem complicated at first, but the best analogy I have heard is that it is like learning to drive a car. It seems like a lot to think of at first but then much of it becomes automatic.

Come back with any questions that arise and know that nothing is considered silly on here. Just ask.
