At risk of diabetes
Hi I'm new here!
I've had a scorching headache for a couple of weeks now, along with being absolutely knackered and feeling really run down.
Today out of curiosity I used one of my husband's urine sticks that he uses to monitor his kidney condition and urine showed up as full of glucose! then I used my own blood sugar monitor and 2 hours after food the reading was 11.8.

I know nobody can diagnose on here but does this sound like I could be on my way at least to type 2?

for context, I have 2 first and second degree relatives with diabetes (T1) and I am quite overweight.

Hi SazBear, welcome to the forum 🙂 11.8 is quite high, although it may depend on what you ate. I'd suggest going to see your nurse or GP for a proper test. If it does turn out that you have Type 2, please try not to worry too much - it is a serious condition, but with the right knowledge and a bit of application it is something that can be managed very well 🙂 In fact, many people discover that the adaptations they make to their diet and activity levels can lead to them feeling much happier and healthier than they have for some time, so much better to know for sure so you can get the help you need to bring things under good control 🙂 We are here to help should you have and concerns or questions, so please let us know! 🙂

Hi Northerner, thank you for your reply. It's not the first time I've had a high reading and given myself a fright. I did go to see a GP on Friday RE the headaches and he's a fantastic doctor and has requested a barrage of blood tests for me, one being a random glucose, so hopefully that will shed more light on the situation. It's just also occurred to me that I've had about 9 courses of steroids this year to control my asthma, and I wondered if they may have played a part in this development! Thank you for your kind words of support 🙂

The steroids may have played a part as they do have a tendency to raise blood sugar levels abnormally. If that is the cause then it may be temporary once you are off them for a while - I hope at least your asthma was brought under control! 🙂

It was on all occasions however the Steroids have left me with a raft of symptoms. Please may I ask, what is a 'good' 2 hour post-meal blood sugar reading? I can't make an awful lot of sense of what I'm seeing online.

Single figures, typically. (So lower than 8 or 9mmol/l.) But it depends on what you ate and drank and how quickly, and all sorts of other things. In your specific case, steroids are quite likely to blame, but having blood tests makes sense just to see if something's out.
