Hello......Well here I am..............Sigh! :(

It is currently looking very much, that I may be on the road with Type 2 diabetes. :( Not suprising really with the amount of rubbish junk food that I eat, and beer that I drink! Not to mention the lack of exercise as well. I had plenty of opportunity to change my ways but carried on without giving any careful thought of the consequences ahead. My poor old Dad, who passed away two years in December, suffered terribly with his Type 2. I dunno if I even dare mention the state his feet got into which led to amputation and dialysis. I saw all the signs but took no notice. Should I go put my head in a noose?

Over the weekend I had a bad spell of waterworks infection and got seen to promptly Monday morning. The pee sample showed the nurse that there was sugar and I had explained that over the weekend there was quite a persisting sticky thirst. She did a Blood Sugar test that read 5.9 and said it looked okay but next week, once the course of Antibiotics that I am on have finished, I will be having a more accurate blood test to see if anything is revealed. I'm sure it'll come back positive.

So this morning, now I'm a little fitter, I got the old CodeFree Blood monitor out to check my before and after brekfast. Admittedly the test strips are out of date (03. 2016) of which I have just bought more from ebay... before brekfast the reading was 119 mg/dl and two hours later the reading was 111. I have to get a mmol/L meter. Readings converted are: 6.6 before and 6.1 two hours after. What doe's that look like to the experts? The brekfast consisted of whole grain bite size shreddies with green top milk, followed by scrambled eggs on one slice of brown bread toast with one rasher of bacon and cuppa tea, green top milk and no sugar.

It is funny.... and you'll laff.... Out came the heart monitor (130/79 pulse 99) and temperature gauge (37.5 under tongue) along with bathroom scales (101.7kg). Wife has even been down Tosco for a whole load of low fat foods.

How long will this last? Could I be here for the rest of my life? well.... I'll have a better idea next week of where I am heading. 🙂

Hi LJ, welcome to the forum 🙂 The number don't look bad at all, and wouldn't be enough to diagnose diabetes. There are a couple of other tests that provide information under more controlled conditions - the OGTT (Oral Glucose Tolerance Test) and HbA1c. The latter is a sort of average of your blood sugar levels over the 6-12 weeks prior to the test - 48 mmol/l or above might indicate diabetes, given the presence of your symptoms. The OGTT involves taking a fasting reading, then you drink a measured amount of glucose and subsequent tests are taken - 11.1 mmol/l or above indicate diabetes.

If it is confirmed try not to worry - no reason why you should take the path your Dad did. With the right knowledge and application diabetes can be controlled well and doesn't need to have a major impact on your life - in many cases a diagnosis actually has a positive outcome if you make the necessary adaptations to your diet and activity levels 🙂

Let us know how you get on! 🙂

Hi LJ, it's a Hba1c test you need. Your levels at the moment aren't too bad at all but generally to register for glucose on a dipstick you need a level over 10. Dipsticks never registered positive for glucose for me even when I had a Hba1c of 52. Hopefully, with the right approach now, you'll dodge the diagnosis and use this as a vital wake up call.

Incidentally, no point in your wife stocking up on low fat food, that's more likely to be higher carb and it's lower carb food you need! Watch the bread, cakes, potatoes, rice, pasta etc. and aim for a walk after meals.

Best wishes and hope you get a negative result. However, use it for life changes. I wish I had!

Good Morning Northerner and Amigo,
Thank you for your welcomes... much appreciated!

I do indeed have a form to take with me to my next weeks Doctors appointment and it mentions on it the HbA1c I have no idea what this is other than a blood test. (so much to take in lol)

I've been having a read around the forum and have been suprised at somethings especially what you can and cannot eat. Hard to convince the wife on somethings.
I've just had brekfast with a starting blood sugar reading of 91mg/dL (bear in mind I mentioned the test strips are a year out of date) by the time I finish this message the after reading, 40 mins from start of meal is...161.. The simple brekfast was of 40g bite size shreddies with 125ml green top milk. Quite nice and feel filled for now.

Hi Welcome. Yes, many things that are considered healthy may not be good for us. Also their is a misconception that it's only sugar we have to watch (I wish). when the reality it its carbohydrates we have to watch.

I don't know if anybody has given you links to info , apologies if you have already seen them

Hi Guys... Well I had a result today after last weeks blood tests. Doctor says the result is 40 but if it had been 48 or over then I'd have problems. Looks like I've had a wake up call. Since my first pee sample when I had waterworks infection I've taken a much more sensible approach to my diet and I guess I must now keep it that way. Exercise and weight loss is my next target.
Thanks again for your help and advice, the whole forum has been interesting and an eye opener.
LJ.

You’ve had a lucky escape 🙂🙂. 42 (6.0%) to 47 (6.4%) is pre diabetes .
That sure was a close call and I am so glad for you.

Hello LJ and welcome to the forum 🙂 I'm glad for your result, you've now got time to get tiptop healthy.

Thank you.... I kinda feel awful leaving you guys behind with my measure of luck, but will certainly heed your kind thoughts and comments. 🙂
