Hi all,

Iam 54 years old and Iam a diabetic T1 for 25 years.
Last year I got fed up with all the usual diabetic complications and problems.
I searched the web and found Dr Bernstein 's Diabetes Solutions . It changed my live . Now my diet is Low Carb High Fat .
I hope I find people here who live Low Carb and we can share and discuss this new way of living.
My insulin is Insulatard / Novo Rapid

Hi Gabrelle. Your not far from "The Boss" (Northener) Welcome. You will have to give us some tips on what you eat.

Hi Gabriele, welcome to the forum 🙂 I think the key to good control is finding the diet that is right for you, so it is good to hear that you have found something that is helping. I'm more of a 'moderate carb' eater, but it suits me and my tastes and lifestyle well and I am fortunate to be able to achieve good control with it 🙂 I'm also 54! 🙂 But I have had diabetes for only 5 years!

Please feel free to join in the conversations as you wish, and if you have any questions, please let us know 🙂

Thanks for your lovely welcome !

Diabetics think I'm mad but I'm absolute convinced I have found my solution. Sorry when my english is not perfect , I ' m German and live here now 13 years .

I changed Dr. Bernsteins advise a bit , it suits me better. ( I'm 1.55 m / 55kg)
I eat daily < 20g Carbs , 50 g Protein and > 100 g Fat . 100 g Fat means you need to eat loads of cream and butter ( saturated Fat ) . This diet is very famous in Sweden ( LCHF ) .
For me it means , no more ups and downs , not hungry anymore , allways in a good mood , Hba1c will be in 2 Months around 6 ( was 8.2 ) , very bad Retinopathy is stable now ( after 2 Month of LCHF ) , less insulin ...
I don't miss bread and pasta , when it gives me the benefits I have now .

I think that's the thing with Bernstein, or any dietary approach - adapt it so that it suits you and what you want to achieve. I'd find it difficult and a radical change to eat so few carbs, but my control is good enough on 120-150g per day, so I'm happy with that 🙂

Great that your retinopathy is now stable! 🙂

Hi and welcom, what works for you works for you. Some great recipes on here that might help you a bit, and you could put some of yours down as well.

Hi megga

Thanks, great to know .
At the moment my diet is quite simple . I'm still at the beginning and still careful what I eat . After my next Bloodtest in 2 months I will increase my carb to 30 to 40 g per day .

It is all new to me and I can't wait to meet type 1 Diabetics who are living LCHF as well .

Welcome to the forum gabriele 🙂

Thanks Mark,

my aim is Hba1c , 5 er club .

Hi and welcome

I think I would struggle with such low carb but when I last saw my DSN she told me I was eating too little carbs so I've gone from about 80g a day to 110g and it's got my hba1c down to 7.6 but still a lot of work to do... Like Northerner says, it's finding something that works for you 🙂

xx

Hello Vix
nice to meet you .
Absolute right, " the Boss " ( I hope his real name is not Bruce ) is spot on.

Everybody has to find their own way to deal with diabetes.
For me this way is the easy option . I control my BG and I'm feeling not hungry anymore.
I'm a diabetic for 25 years now , the first 10 years were easy , the next 10 years were difficult and the last 5 years were hell .
When I got my last BT results I knew , i'm going for a bumpy ride and that was my turning point My Hba1c was going in the wrong direction from 7.9 to 8.2 , my cholesterol over 6 , and my eyes after so much treatment still no recovery in sight . I had to do something.
Now after a few month of experiments , ! startet on this strict diet and could not belive it . Even could my eyedoctor when he told me , that my Retinopathy has stopped . In 5 - 6 month I have my next appointment and I hope some of the damages are reversed.
One good new , yesterday I could read the football score on the telly from my sofa !
