Type 1
I have recently been diagnosed with Type 1 - it came as a bit of a shock but over the last couple of weeks I have started to come to terms with it.

The help and support that I've received is superb and now signing on to this support sight has clearly identified that there is even more support, help and advice from others that are in the same position.

Hi Reggie, rome wasnt built in a day. You will have lots to learn, Good luck & you have joined a good site 🙂

Hi Reggie, welcome to the forum 🙂 What insulin regime are you on? Good to hear that you have been looked after well! There are lots of friendly, experienced people here who will hopefully be able to help if you have any questions, so do ask away.

I would recommend having a browse of our Useful links thread for links to some good sources of information. I would particularly recommend Type 1 Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Young People by Ragnar Hanas - known as the 'Type 1 bible', very comprehensive and well-written.

How did you come to be diagnosed?

HOBIE - Thanks for your response.

I realised straight away that it is a complex condition and that it will take a while to get to grips with.

I am determined to keep on top of it and that it will take time to do so.

With the support from an excellent site like this one, there will always be someone to bounce questions and concerns off of and gain more experience as time goes by.

Reggae hi a very warm welcome to the forum.

How did you come to be diagnosed?

I am currently on Novamix 70 / 30 twice a day - before breakfast and before dinner, it appears to be stabilising my Blood sugars at the moment, I am also on Metformin twice a day.

I was diagnosed following a visit to the Drs about a bad chest infection, I explained that I had lost weight, drinking excessive amount of fluids and therefore going to the loo very frequently and feeling very lethargic.

My Dr sent me for a blood test and the rest all fell in to place.

My blood sugar readings at the start were in the high 20's so reducing my sugar intake and re-jigging my diet made me very ill.

Once the insulin was prescribed - within a couple of days - I felt so much better than I had for quite some time.

I am now Type 1 and not afraid to say it, my family have all been superb and my colleagues at work.

I am due for my three month check up in a week or so to see if they are going to change my Insulin.

Early days.

It is early days Reggie, but it sounds like you have made a good start. Diabetes shouldn't stop you from doing anything you want to do, it just takes a little more planning at times 🙂 Regarding the insulin - many people find that using a regime called basal/bolus (also known as MDI = Multiple Daily Injections) is better and more flexible than mixed. This entails having a slow-acting insulin (usually levemir or lantus) once or twice a day, and then a fast-acting insulin each time you eat a meal or snack containing carbohydrates. This might sound like lots more injections, but it also means that you can eat what you want, when you want (within reason, of course!), and allows much finer control than a mix. Definitely worth asking about when you have your check up.

Hi reggie & welcome.

I was on mixed insulin when I was diagnosed for about a week before I was put on MDI, so it's worth asking about when you go to clinic but you'll get there 🙂

How you finding testing your blood sugars?

Welcome to the forum Reggie 🙂

Good evening,

I test my bloods a minimum of 4 times a day, it's not too bad, got used to it now but a little painful at times but in the big scheme of things I know it needs to be done.

If it hurts maybe the depth your lancet pen is set to is too deep for you

It was painful when I first started but with adjustments made it has improved and not so painful.
Thanks

Hi Reggie and welcome 🙂

I have mine set to a 2 Laura .. no thick skin here! but still get the occasional one that makes me swear :D I think sometimes you just have less tolerance for it 🙂
