It wasn't the news I was expecting. My right eye has grown blood vessels and I now have to have Laser treatment. The Dr told me these blood vessels are bad, but the worse one's are the prominent ones and mine, at least, are flat, but they carry the risk of bleeding, so after 22 years, I will be laserd, and it will probably be September, as she said it would be about a month :( Sheena

Have these offending vessels grown back after a leak or have they just grown of there own accord........?

They just seem to have taken up residence in the right one, obviously they thought the left one was not good enough! The Dr didn't mention a leak just that I have new ones and it's not good. Oh dear, Sheena

I'm very sorry to hear this Sheena :( I hope that the lasering is minimal and soon over and done with 🙂 A lot of our members have experienced lasering so hopefully they will be able to give you some reassurance 🙂

Better to get it fixed up sooner rather than later, the success rate is very good I believe..........

My understanding is that diabetics are at risk of vessel leaks because of fluctuating blood sugar levels/blood pressure, if there is a leak the blood vessel will actually grow back in the attempt to repair, quite a rare event compared to the rest of our bodies, the new vessel is somewhat weaker and at risk of leaking again......

this was why I was asking if you have had a leak before.......

Hi Sheena , sorry to hear this , keep us updated on how you get on .

Sorry to hear this Sheena hun big (((hugs))) let us know if theres any support we can give you ok xx t/c

Sorry to hear this Sheena - you are going through the mill at the moment aren't you ?

I hope that the appointment comes quickly, the treatment successful and that you have a speedy recovery.

Hi - I have had the old laser treatment on three different occasions and have to say although its not my idea of a perfect day out its not too awful. I've never had any pain from it afterwards and during the treatment all you really experience is very bright light. Hope you have it soon over and done with. Kind regards Susie B

My blood sugars are okay and I don't have high blood pressure, it's just one of those things I guess. I'm not overly worried about the treatment..........it's just another medical problem on top of others lately.

Thank you guys for your support, I will let you know when the event takes place. Sheena X

Hi Sheena, sorry to hear you're going to have laser, it's never news we want is it? I guess the good thing is it's just one eye, although I appreciate that might feel like small comfort at the mo. I've had a lot of lasering to date (both eyes) but the encouraging bit is that I still fully meet the requirements for driving (visual field etc) and although like someone else has said it's not fun, it is bearable. Personally I did find I had headaches afterwards, but sunglasses help as do avoiding vdus / fluourescent lights etc if they are irritating you. The best news is that the laser treatment is very effective, it has stabilised/stopped my retinopathy, which makes any associated stress / discomfort worth it.

All the best,

Twitchy xx

Thanks Twitchy for your support it's good to know how others have coped with laser surgery, it's the eyes isn't it? the thought of beams being directed straight into the eye etc. I'm so glad your laser surgery was very sucessful, it's really good to know. Many thanks Sheena x

Hi Sheena

I'm so sorry that it has taken me so long to reply but I was away at mum and dad's for a long weekend. I'm really sorry to hear about your eye. It is always such a shock the first time that you realise that the diabetes has affected your eyes. When I started having problems a few years ago I put on half a stone in weight comfort eating after each appointment that they told me that there was bleeding etc (I've never lost that stone in weight!). I didn't need my first lasering for the diabetes until the end of this May - again I was in shock because you feel as if it's the beginning of something else going wrong, and I did go into meltdown afterwards - but the effects were all psychological and I now feel much more positive about it - because if they laser then it means they can do something about it. Please don't be worried at all about the actual lasering. When I had mine in May it did not hurt at all and there was absolutely no discomfort. Massive hugs for you.xxx

Thank you again Amanda, I'm so pleased that your laser treatment went well. It's just one more thing after another, I do worry worry about how Tia is REALLY coping with all the different hospital appointments I have been having, she says she's ok with it, but I'm off for another blood test tomorrow morning for the Restless Leg Syndrome which has been playing up- again. Oh whoe is me 😛 Sheena
