At risk of diabetes
Hi everyone,

I’m 29 weeks post partum and developed gestational diabetes which required 5 doses of insulin to control. Everything seemed fine until a couple of weeks ago when I started getting symptoms again. I’ve tested my sugar levels this morning after fasting and it was 7.1. Is this high for fasting? I know I should go to the gp but we’ve recently changed doctors and don’t have a new patient appointment until next Wednesday. I’m terrified that I’m diabetic. Thanks for reading, I appreciate any advice!
Thanks
Kate

Welcome to the forum @Kate_2023

Try not to worry too much at this stage. While having had gestational diabetes can suggest some additional risk, there are no guarantees for or against a diabetes diagnosis.

Home BG meters aren’t really designed or intended for diagnostic purposes. You’d really need to wait for your appointment, explain your history and worries and ask them for an HbA1c check to see what your glucose levels have been doing over the past 3-4 months.

7.1 may be slightly elevated, but it’s not conclusive, and could be caused by a number of things.

Let us know how you get on. 🙂

Don’t panic @Kate_2023 Even if you were to have Type 2 after GD, you’d be in a very different position from when you were pregnant. Pregnancy causes huge insulin resistance, which is why insulin is often needed. Being non-pregnant, a person who had developed diabetes after GD might well be able to control it with diet.

But - it’s possible you don’t even have diabetes. Get an HbA1C test and go from there. Don’t worry yourself without information.
