Hello all, how are we?
as you can probably tell from the title of the thread i'm not i the best of moods.
I had a minor car accident on the way home from work today. It was completely my fault and nothing to do with my diabetes and the other guy was really nice to me and with no damage done to his car fingers crossed we wont have to go through insurance companies. but my parents are arguing whether or not you are supposed to inform the insurance company that the accident happened even though i wont be claiming (i'll fork out for the new bumper :-s). but does anyone know if you are suppose to tell them anyway??

it also got us talking at the dinner table to whether or not anyone told the insurance company about my diabetes. i'm not the main person on the insurance so i've not spoken to them and neither of my parents can remember either..... so another question.... are we as diabetics obliged to tell insurance companies about said diabetes??
thanks all.

p.s. i'm not hurt x

Hi Fran, as a non-driver I can't answer your questions - just wanted to say I'm glad to hear you are OK 🙂

Glad you arent hurt.🙂Bev

I'm glad you are ok. I don't think you have to tell them about the accident, as no one will be claiming from them. I do think you should tell them that you are diabetic. I know my insurance didn't charge any more. I hope this helps.

Hi Fran, sorry to hear bout the accident :( glad you aren't hurt though, that's the main thing. I don't know the answers to your questions but just wanted to send warm thoughts on this cold evening. 🙂

glad you're alreet I would say that you would be advised to tell them incase they use it as a way of not paying out, nothing changed with my insurance after I told them, it is just harder to assess online quotes as we ain't normal!!
I assume you have told DVLA and you're legit there!?

Take care, esp in these white days!

Rossi 🙂

Although I am only a named driver on hubby's insurance, I told them and it is noted on the details.

Yup DVLA are well informed so no worries there.

Thanks for all the well wishes everyone. i really am ok. i was a little shaken at the time but not stirred. never been in an accidnet before so it was a little strange. I'm not the policy holder so i'll hand over the responsibilty to my mum of telling the insurance company. but thanks for the advice everyone🙂

If only i could have blamed the ice! and it sounds like i'm going to need a new bumper, fog light and number plate!! i swear i didn't hit them that hard!

Even as the only insured driver on my car I'm not sure if you have to inform the insurance company even if you'll not claiming, there is a legal thing about you should inform the police of a road accident within 24 hours though..

But in most cases unless neither party are informed if no claim is being made, as to the police it's one of those laws used when throwing the book at you in court, if you've left the scene of an accident with an attempt of avoiding claims being made against you for damage done...

It would be wise if the policy holder on your insurance, rings the insurance company to double check they've notified them you'll diabetic.. As if you have an accident and they haven't been informed you aren't legally covered so could face being prosecuted for driving while uninsured facing 6 penilty points..

The policy holder also can face prosecution unlikely but possible, as they would have obtained your insurance under false protencies as I said very unlikely but it depends on who's throwing the book

I've just had some information about this,

Apparently you do have to inform your insurance company, due to the law being changed where it's possible to make a claim against another driver at a later date with whip lash injuries etc.. You won't be covered by the legal fee's if you haven't notified the insurers that an incident occured..

And even minor whip lash injury can be an hefty bill, my daughter 2 1/2 years ago was a passager in her friends car, when they where shunted at a roundabout... My daughter sustained minor whip lash, off work for a week a year after the accident she was paid ?3500😱 goodness knows what the actual legal fee's where over the year and this was settled out of court..

think everything been answered. Yes you do have to tell your insurance re diabetes.

It should not cost you any more but on mine it is written in the policy that I have diabetes treated with insulin.

Any insurance that you could make a personal claim against requires the Company to be notified as current known medical condition.
Its similar to holday insurance where if you don't disclose on application or decide not pay the additional premium and you have a D related illness:
  • if in an EU country you will be covered for in country treatment, your insurers will not for repatriation to the UK. Dependent on the severity (i.e. if you require medical accompniment doctor/nurse etc) this could be in excess of ?20k. Personal experience from a cousin who had an accident and was comatised. It was 6 months before we raised the ?25 cash, through various charity events and personal donations. Fortunately he is now improving.
Sorry to go off the subject, but the answer is tell them. My car isurers were notified and no extra cost. Our annual family travel inurance costs ?25 more - money well spent.

thanks for all the advice. I think i was aware of some of the implications of it all but not quite in that much detail.

We've had to claim on the insurance anyway bcecause the damage to my car is more extensive than we first thought and we checked that they knew about my diabetes and apparently they did, we just couldn't rememeber telling them.

i'm still waiting to hear from the other driver though and i'm now worried he's going to claim whip lash or something. as we didn't call the police is this kind of situation going to be a problem?

Hi Fran, as far as I am aware, the police only need to be informed if someone is injured (& realises or suspects they are) at the scene, at the time, or if someone fails to stop at the scene of the accident. I don't think if the other driver & you were fine at the scene you'd have a problem? I guess if you are worried, or if you later find out (ie via your insurance company) that they have decided to put in a claim for injury, you could call your local police number to get the incident logged? Probably worth reporting anyway, as you do hear from time to time of people deliberately causing accidents (contriving to stop suddenly to get run into etc!) to carry out insurance fraud. If this is the case it might help flag such a scoundrel up! 😉

Hope all turns out well! 🙂
