Yes, it is totally normal! Don't worry, we have all been there.... it's just knowing that this is for life and you can't make it go away, and it is very daunting and depressing when you start to realise that. Do not feel bad about it at all, it's totally understandable. I kept carrying on as if all was fine for a few weeks, then everything came crashing down on me in Sainsbury's one night when I got fed up of looking at ingredients lists!
Have you had much support from your GP or nurse? It would be good to talk to them about how you're feeling, as they will have seen many people in the same situation.
Do not worry about medication - it's not a bad thing if you need it, and many people on here are on meds. As a T1 I had no choice, and people often assume I must hate taking insulin, but I don't, because it makes me feel better! If your body can't produce enough insulin then it's not your fault, it just needs some help to get those sugar levels down. And once they are lower that will help your mood too, and you'll feel less tired.
Hang on in there and keep posting when you're feeling low, or if you have any questions about diet or medications.
