Relationship to Diabetes

Sounds daft but it is so true.

I was diagnosed in hospital and after a week discharged with insulin pen and zero advice. Diagnosis Diabetic type 1

However this is not about that nor is it a rant. I discoved almost by accident that I am in fact type 2.

I have learned so much from the members on this forum. Initially I had no idea that for me, as a type 2 diabetic, that it was all about carbohydrates and reducing them to a level my body can cope with.

Then someone posted about weight loss being a possible important factor for some and then a video about fat thresholds. Yup I was obese and even the thought of exercise filled me with dread. My hips hurt too when I walked (hardly surprising considering the extra weight I was carrying as fat).

People also mentioned aboout how helpful getting some exercise has been for their blood glucose levels, and I have found the same. I increased my exercise to at least 1 hr walking a day. Blood glucose levels all good. Weight dropped considerably.

New things still surprise me. Like, this morning, someone mentioned oat cakes. I looked them up and it seems they are a better alternative to rice cakes. So I will now try them out.

Someone mentioned marmite peanut butter a while back. I tried that recently and it is really good. Tasty. A bit gloopy though. I spread it thinly onto the rice cakes (now to be oat cakes)

All sounds trivial. Sounds obvious. But I didn't know these things. Nor did I know that I didn't know. Now I do and as far as oat cakes are concerned I will inlude them into my diet, they will help me in my meals. In fact every bit of positive useful information you all have posted has helped me and propbably helped many others.

So really this post is to encourage you all to post revelations and findings that work for you. They might inspire or help someone else. The possible topic range is huge too, pretty much anything, you name it.

My latest discovery is that 'it is recommended somewhere' (Newzealand? can't remember) that we eat at least 30g of nuts a day. I am aiming for that. Thank goodness that I like some nuts. No idea if it is being helpful to me yet.

As I always say @Gwynn, every day’s a school day. This forum is definitely a wealth of information.

Before buying a jar of the marmite peanut butter which seemed quite expensive, I just tried the marmite on the cracker and then spread the peanut butter, perfectly acceptable.
I also like marmite with sliced tomato and cheese which would work well on your oakcake. The Nairn ones are available in lots of different flavours, we had a ginger one from Lidl really nice but have not seen it since.

Glad this forum has helped you, it most certainly helped me (and still is) im t2 4 month in and the advice on foods and general advice on here has helped loads, though keep in mind that what works on a t1 may not necessarily work on a t2 and vice versa. Hell what works for one t2 may not work for another t2, its all a ride and were along for the trip.
