At risk of diabetes
Hi Everyone.

I have just been diagnosed as Prediabetic with a Hba1c of 43.

Hello @Bushbaby57 , welcome to the forum. Ask all the questions you need to about pre diabetes, we’ll do our best to help.
Though this must have come as a shock to you, you stand a good chance of beating this. What info if any were you given.

Hiya All.

Ljc... The diagnosis came more as a concern than a shock. I did tell the nurse that I thought my HbA1c will flag up after my blood test. The higher than normal reading would be because of my love of crisps and sweets :(. so, was advised to stop those. I had been asked if I wanted to enrol on a Diabetes course, which I initially said yes, but then I decided that I would start with my own self-help plan, then request another HbA1c test in a couple of months or so.

I have a friend who had the same test, and hers came back at 67. That inspired me to check mine . So I had bought myself an Acu-chek tester, and some relevant cook books which also give me info on what foods are best for people like us.

I did a 2 hour after meal test today (salad stuff with anchovies). Came up as 5.0 mmol/L 🙂

Hi Bushbaby, sounds like you’ve made a great start. It’s that feeling peckish you’ve got to conquer. Doesn’t mean you can’t snack, but keep it low carb and filling, like a slice of mature cheddar, then you can stay off the diabetes register.

It’s good to get these lifestyle warnings, but it takes a bit of willpower to adjust, specially at this time of year.

Best of luck🙂

Hi mikeyB

Many thanks for the encouragement. What other snacks do you recommend?

Sounds like you are on the right track. Don’t discount the prevention course though, as you may gain useful info. It’s good that you decided to be tested just incase , fingers crossed you can beat it into submission.

We have some great cooks on here , you may want to have a look at their low carb inventions , recipes

Here is a long runnng thread about what we’ve been eating, inc things that caused our halo to slip firmly round our/my ankles
what-did-you-eat-yesterday
You’ll find the above and more on the food carb queries forum

If you would like a meter that is cheaper to self fund the test strips
Many here use the SD Codefree Codefree meter , it’s strips are around £8 for 50

Some nuts are lowish in carbohydrates, I’m into walnuts atm. Almonds are pretty good too.
Cheese , berries (not grapes)
You’ll get lots of ideas on the threads I mentioned above.

Gosh, you really are a bushbaby, they are nocturnal too:D

I agree with Lin, nuts are great for a nibble, and with it being Christmas you can get variety packs to pick your favourite. If you search, you should be able to find Kettle Veggie crisps which are low carb and fun. If you like a tooth challenge, pork scratchings are surprisingly low on carbs, if a little high on fat.

Berries are generally fine, as Lin says. I find an apple makes little if any change to my BG (try one and see, not everybody is the same) but bananas are a definite no no - Boris Becker used to eat bananas between games for fast energy replacement. Carb grenades.

But have a look around. Low carb is big business, the supermarkets are now developing a range of low carb cakes and such, but better to look on our food section for low carb recipes. Tom Kerridges Dopamine Diet book is a good source too, if you need to lose any weight. I love it.

Watch the low carb stuff, the daughters were estatic to find me biscuits, but they were literally a gram or so different for twice the price.

I like frozen blueberries to snack on, light mature cheddar, and hard boiled eggs. I’m ok with one satsuma, bananas are a disaster

Chicken. Chicken is great. For some reason I thought you were veggie!
