Today I went to see the cardiologist, ( I am being passed from department to department, as they try to work out what is wrong with me! ) she basically told me there was apparently nothing at all wrong with my heart, which was good, but gave me the blood test results from last week.

I am now a little confused. When I was first diagnosed at the end of July, my HbA1c was 95, which was high and I was told I would be tested again in three months. However my endocrinologist decided to repeat the test last week, now less than two months later the HbA1c is 69, which seems a huge drop in such a short time, which is good, but is not logical! There is too much of an overlap between the tests which is leaving me wondering what the true number is...

What leaves me even more confused is that as I am now testing my blood sugar, I am finding that carbs are affecting a lot less than I expected. Today before my evening meal, my meter told me I was 6.2. After my meal it said I was only 7.1, a lot less than I expected. I am trying to focus on trends, but after another meal of baked potato and chilli, ( it was very nice! ) it was unexpected.

Can anyone enlighten me on what could be going on please? Could it be a false reading on the meter? Should I just shut up and accept my apparent good fortune?

If I recall, the A1c test is weighted more to the more recent BG levels.... Someone correct me if I'm wrong...

It appears that what you have been doing is working for you.... Great job, keep it up..... Some of us can tolerate certain foods better than others, we are all individual, united by a common disease.

Yup, the previous 4 weeks are responsible for (I think these are the right-ish ratios) 55% of the new HbA1c result. The next 4 weeks back for 35% of it and the oldest 4 weeks for 20%.

What were the circumstances of the 3 months prior to the first test? What had you been up to? LOL

Congratulations are definately in order!! Well done.

HbA1c can drop fairly quickly by just making small changes so it's fine, and your results are great🙂. I just made small changes and mine went from 123 to 61 in 2 1/2 months. Like the others say the test is skewed to the last month or so.

Well, I guess I was eating carbs/sugar like a pig in a trough! Seriously though, I was without a doubt overdoing the comfort eating thing. Whatever else, this whole episode has taught me quite a lot, I just hope I can keep the lessons to mind for the future. I have felt much better since losing the weight and the change in diet. 🙂

OK, I will try to take my apparent good fortune in a better way and try to stop looking for the bad in everything. Time for the glass to be half full again maybe...🙂

I dropped from 91 to 47 in 80 days, eating low carb, so the numbers are not impossible. I was down to 41 after 6 months.

Well your blood tests - either fingerprick ones from your own meter or the armful of blood ones we have to see the vampires about - will always tell us whenever we're straying away from the straight and narrow.

What a PITA ! LOL

My first HbA1c results were lost, so had a second test a week later. The second test was 86. Later, the results of the first test were found & it was 96. So that was a reasonable drop in just a week.
