Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi everybody I’m a newbie, iv have just been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, my Dr. Rang and told me that he was going to put me in Metformin.
He said I need to lose weight and that my liver was very fatty, I don’t drink but do carry a lot of fat around my middle, before I got diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes I started on Saxenda which is a slim
Jab but obviously I can’t now use that so that was a waste of money. I have tried dieting g but the weight does not budge and also I’m so hungry all the time, I could eat a huge meal and still want more, my height is only 4ft 10in and I weigh 11 and a half stone my BMI is 34. I haven’t got a clue what I need to eat and as it is not easy to see a Dr at the moment I don’t know what I’m going to do,

Hello @Alicem0208
Welcome to the forum

Diabetes is a serious condition, but you can do a lot to help yourself and there is a help and support available. You will need to make a few changes though.

Most of us find that we to reduce the amount of carbohydrates we eat. There is no 'one size fits all' though and you need to find out what works for you.

What has worked for me is a low-carb diet, and I will list some of the things that have helped me -

As well as cutting out all sugary things I seriously reduce all starchy carbs - bread, pasta, rice, potatoes etc.
I eat lots of veg, which helps me feel full - but mainly the less starchy ones that grow above the ground.
Proteins, particularly chicken, fish and some cheese are fine and help me feel full - but I avoid processed food.
Fruit also needs to be limited as it can be high in carb, I limit to one portion a day, usually berries.
I include lots of good fats - oily fish, olive oil, avaacado, nuts and a little cheese.

It helps to have a blood sugar monitor to help you work out what foods most effect you blood sugars and arrive at an eating plan that is good for you. If you are interested in this we can give you more details.
A useful book is http://www.carbsandcals.com/thebook.html to find out about carb content of different foods.

There is a lot to get used to, so best to take it all steadily and learn what is best for you and that you will be able to sustain.

You will find lots of help on the forum, and please ask any questions.
The 'Learning Zone' tab at the top of this page is also a good information

Hi Alice0208,

I was diagnosed in June and have followed the advice given to you above. I started off with about 10 stones to lose and a BG of 19 and hbAc1 of an ENORMOUS 138. Ive been trying to lose weight all my adult life but failing and am losing it now on the low carb diet. I lost a stone and a bit due to diabetes but since being on meds and low carb it’s now coming off the proper way - slowly and I have a few ups and downs but I’ve now lost 2 Stones and 2lbs And my BG readings are mostly between 5,1 and 6.8. I’ve had two 7S in the last two weeks.
I can really recommend the advice above. If I’d come to diabetes forums earlier in my life...these folk know what it’s all about!
largesse.
