Hi Maddi GG, welcome to the forum. Would you mind clarifying what you are asking? Do you want to know what foods work to recover from a hypo (low blood sugar level of below 4.0) or what foods to eat to avoid a spike in BG levels?
 
What I meant by it was what food do you go to first to get your blood sugar back up e.g sweets or glucose tablets
 
Thanks for the clarification. Yes, glucose tablets work well, but you can use anything with a high sugar content. The higher the better. Some people use sweets such as jelly babies or similar. Orange juice, even full sugar coke etc. do the trick.
 
For hypo’s 4.0 or lower when at home I use 150 ml of full sugar Coke or fruit juice.
When out I always have a big bottle of glucose tablets in my bag and chew three or four of them

The routine is treat a hypo with 15 g of a very fast acting carbs as above or many here use jelly babies, ( I would scoff them and not have any left for when hypo) 15 mins later test and treat if necessary and keep doing this until your at least 4. 0 , unless you are driving then the rules are very different.

If you drive do you know the driving g rules when on insulin?
 
Jelly babies, mini pack of Haribo or small carton of juice.
 
Welcome to the forum @Maddi GG. I am another jelly baby person.
I learnt that the reason they are better at doing their job than many other sweets is that they are made of glucose rather than other refined sugars, so will get into our system very quickly (even though on some occasions it feels like it is taking forever!!)
 
I use marmalade. For several reasons: its cheap, keeps well, works, and I like marmalade. The disadvantage is that like flattery, a little goes a long way, and as co-ordination may not be optimal under hypo conditions you may end-up with a thin coat of the stuff.

Any jam would work just as well. It is good for treating hypos in children. You can even use it on an un-responding diabetic smear some around the lips and the natural reaction is to lick the stuff off. Recovery may occur while waiting for the ambulance.

You can also use raisins, but they need to be chewed.

When out and about I use glucose tablets, marmalade is just too sticky.
 
I love dried prunes. so they are my go to treat if I go hypo at home but out and about, I always carry dextrose tablets as they are convenient and easy to carry.
