Hello everybody, I do hope you don't mind me posting this message here as I am not actually diabetic myself...I did sign in as a 'carer' 😱
I am trying to find if there are any members on here using the above insulin. I belong to a Diabetic forum....for CATS! and we have a problem in that the veterinary equivalent of this insulin was withdrawn from production over a year ago. This means that our cats are left only with Caninsulin which suits dogs, not cats.
So...anybody out there?????:D

Hiya,
I answered your querry on the other forum. and gave you the link to the manufactures of animal insulin's.
Hypurin Bovine Protamine Zinc is not made any more the nearest you have is Isophane.
Sorry correction Lente is still made my mistake as didn't see it tucked away amongst the other insulin's

Hi (again ) Sue. I am afraid that the link you provided for Wockhardts does not work and I was not aware from your post that in fact Hypurin is no longer in production. This is very bad news indeed. I will do some research into the isophane you mention.
Thanks once again

Hypurin insulin is in production I use the stuff http://www.wockhardt.co.uk/animal-insulin/index.asp just search the index for your needs. I have just done a google search as well for bovine insulin for animals and again it comes up with pharmacy's supplying hypurin insulin.

Lente is also available which I didn't realise http://www.wockhardt.co.uk/products/productdetail.asp?productid=358

Sorry, I got confused with the info in your first message. Ok, so the Wockhardt site says it is going to be available for the foreseeable future.
Our problem is that most vets will not prescribe this even though under the Cascade system they can do so. I was hoping ( against hope ) that someone would be able to donate a vial.😱

No it's illegal to do so.
Simple solution is to change vets and sign a disclaimer to say you take full responsibility for using the prescribed insulin and being fully informed it's off list.

What about the alternative Sue mentioned, or another? Is there nothing else that will work? Why not ask Wockhardt if there's a vet in your area that will prescribe the stuff?

Wockhardt wouldn't know, vets like pharmacy's have their own suppliers who source their drugs for them.

One option though is to contact an online pharmacy and ask if they could tell you the name of a vet who will prescribe the insulin you want. Quick google search brings up this one http://www.petdrugsonline.co.uk/site.aspx?i=pr479579

Can't offer any advice, just wanted to say I hope you get it sorted out and ***** is better for it.

Hi charliesugar. Welcome 🙂

The website for caninsulin states that it's suitable for dogs AND cats and that it is based on porcine insulin.

http://www.caninsulin.co.uk/

There are many of us on here who lived for years on procine insulin, and a few who still do I think.🙂

Has your cat not responded well to it?

Rob (a cat, dog and general animal lover 😉)

Rob,
Charliesugar has stated it's not suitable for this particular cat
Dogs do fine on it as it's porcine based and cat's natural insulin is more in tune with Bovine. Hence the request for for the bovine insulin 🙂

Thanks Sue.

Didn't understand the actual problem other than it was good for dogs.🙂

The usual 'one size fits all' that manufacturers love for cost efficient production and profit maximisation doesn't always match the real world then? 🙄:D

I hope all ends well.🙂

Rob

Thank you all for your replies, you have been very kind to spare me your time.
As a group we are aware that it is possible to ring around and maybe find a vet who is willing to provide Hypurin. However this alone can take time, and then there is the time and expense of travelling to and from a distant vet clinic. Most vets will want to hospitalise a cat to try and get it stabilised, this will cost ?1200-?1500 for the initial work. Many owners just cannot afford this and the end result is that the cat is put to sleep.:(

It does not take that much time to ring around to find a vet to prescribe the insulin you require.
As to stabilising a cat in a vets practice just say no as the cat is active at home so no comparison to life stuck in a cage.

Simple thing to say from the word go is no ins cover 🙂 It works wonders.
By law I believe a vet has to do a check up after a certain amount of time ie the cost of a visit. This enables the prescription to be continued.

When my dog became diabetic, vet gave me all the options. I pointed out I was type 1 on insulin and asked if dog could have my insulin as well. He said no reason why not, we worked out what he needed dose wise. Sorted hypo treatment and all was fine. He went for 6 monthy checks and lived to the age of 15 1/2. This was a fit active working Collie as well.

Can I ask why the porcine insulin doesn't suit cats ?

Is it the active profile or just that cats are closer to cows than pigs (in pancreatic terms at least :D) ?🙂

Here you go Rob http://lorie-huston.suite101.com/types-of-insulin-for-diabetic-dogs-and-cats-a136521

It's a USA site where it states animal is not made for human use. Which is incorrect. What it actually should say is that the big pharma decided loadsa money could be made from synthetic insulin so it was stopped from being made and then with plenty of scare mongering about BSE it was banned for import as well. Animal insulin is infact available in the USA as just imported from Canada and the UK.

INteresting. Seems that lantus and, possibly levemir are ok.

Never had a diabetic pet so not up on rules of prescribing but would have thought a single sourced solution has more to do with marketing than clinical choice.

I presume a vet can do a deal with any supplier who'll offer a free holiday or a cheaper price for drugs as long as the products won't harm the animals in question. Could the "my cat doesn't do well on this insulin so I may have to sue you if its condition deteriorates" line be used I wonder?

Is caninsulin likely to cause harm to a cat or is it just not so easy to predict hypos?

Rob

Sadly we have been unable to help this poor cat, he has gone into DKA again and owner has no funds for a prolonged hospital stay, therefore she is having him put to sleep.
