Fresh Orange juice is good. But my personal favourite would be Jelly Babies - yumm!!

Another vote for jelly babies.

I've also discovered squeezy pouches of fruit, dairy or jelly in various flavours from ASDA - approx 13g carbohydrate in a tough pouch that fits easily in a pocket or bumbag for energy when running. Lighter weight and less disastrous than juice if carton bursts. Not sickly at all.

Lower your insulin 😛
If at home try a couple of spoonfuls of jam or how about some liquid glucose or some ready made cake icing?

Jelly babies are effective, although I have moved to still, orangy energy drinks...............

How often is a lot?

Other suggestions are dolly mixtures and wine gums or fruit pastils.

Just a thought, if you're vegetarian, some things like fruit jellies and jelly babies contain animal based gelatine, so it's worth checking.

I hope you get all the hypose sorted

Failing fresh orange juice or jelly babies. A slice of white toast with jam should do it. Or if you're me, a bit of mash or a few chips.

I'm guessing that the hypos are due to all the dancing you do? Obviously the best solution would be to really get a handle on how much insulin you need prior to and after dancing so you need less sugar to sustain you. I can imagine that sweets aren't appealing when you are exercising - I'm not too keen on jelly babies when I am out on a long run as they are just too sickly. Any drink containing sugar is fine though, doesn't have to be fizzy. I have things like powerade occasionally, but I let it go flat first. 🙂 A few sips at regular intervals can help to maintain your levels, but unfortunately it is trial and error getting the insulin and sugar balance just right. If you are having a lot of hypos it could be that your slow-acting insulin dose is too high. Your body becomes much more sensitive to insulin when you are active, plus the body is also able to use blood glucose for energy to some extent without insulin when exercising. Add to this the fact that, once you have stopped exercising your liver and muscles try to replenish their stores of glucose and you can see that a little insulin can go a very long way! 🙂

Hi Talia

I tend to agree with Alan. If these hypos are become regular and problematic there may be other ways around them than just reactively scoffing lucozade to balance out your heavy dance schedule.

Not sure when your meal is in relation to dance sessions, but if you eat in the hour or two before you dance then you could try significantly reducing your quick-acting dose at that meal (-20 or -30%).

I saw others suggesting pumps in another thread, and they can be very helpful in these circumstances as you can reduce your basal 'on the fly'. That's trickier to do on MDI, though I understand Levemir reacts quicker to dose changes so you *could* find success with a reduced daytime Levemir shot on dancing days.

Hope you get it sorted soon... All those hypos will play havoc with your warning signs :(

Talia is fairly recently diagnosed as in end of last year so also has to contend with the honeymoon period, which as we all know will also cause extra hypos as her pancreas splutters to a halt.
My personal view is far to much insulin is being used at the moment. So in discussion with her team she needs to have a good look at her carb ratio and pos go as far as halving it whilst doing so much exercise. (Her intro stated adjusting her basal caused her to be high) It would be interesting to know how many carbs Talia is using to treat the hypos and her carb ratio.

Thanks Sue.

Lantus can be a funny one like that can't it. + or - 1u and you can be chasing hypos or firefighting highs all day.

Adding honeymoon period in too can only make things trickier to manage :(

I have been having discussions with my dietician due to my bad handling of hypos as I can't stand sweet/sickly things. Unfortunately have had agree to treating with some kind of fast-acting sweet item so found Tesco Fruit Jellies - 2 sweets contain 20.4g of sugar so don't take much eating but sort out a hypo quickly.

it is when i am dancing i need them.. and i like the iceing idea🙂

okay🙂 and whenever i have dancing witch is every night exept sunday and we reduce my insulin alot but it never works:(
