Hello,

I’ve been recently diagnosed with diabetes type 2 back in January and have been having stable blood sugars (4-6 before eating and up to 8 after eating) and feel quite proud of it. I’m currently on metformin (2000g a day) and gliclazide (80g a day).

However, I have been dealing with severe panic attacks and awful anxiety since being diagnosed, as I’ve tried to be on it with diet and exercise etc. It was really affecting my day to day work and life so my gp suggested going on citolopram. Since being on this 1 week ago I have had 3 hypos ranging from 3.4-3.8, and I read up there may be a connection? All I’ve done is heighten my carb intake from 150g of carbs to 170g a day and doing the 15 - 15 rule when needed, which seems to be working, but I still worry that I might get a hypo at any given time when I’ve been following the advice given to me initially.
I have a check up soon and not sure whether to wait until then, should be some time this month or I should take it more urgently. Is it a matter of lowering the medicine?

Thank you for taking the time to read this xx

Hi @angie9955, I'm a T2 just on metformin, but I'm also on 20g citalopram. I've never had any issue with this, but having said that I've been on citalopram for longer than the metformin so maybe my body is used to it.
I'd speak to your DN as soon as possible because you don't really want to lower any medication without advice from a practitioner.
I'd be really interested in other people's experience of diabetes and citalopram, in case there is any link which I should be aware of.
Best of luck Angie

Sorry to hear about the low glucose levels you have been experiencing.

You might want to nip to a pharmacy and discuss this possible interaction between meds with the qualified pharmacist. if it is a known and common reaction, They should becaware of up to date guidance.

But it does sound like your doses might need adjusting?

I’d speak to a pharmacist or your doctor but I’d expect your doctor to suggest reducing the gliclazide
