Hello,

I'm a new insulin user. I've had 3 hypos so far, nothing horrendous. A few days ago the usual symptoms came on. For me these are suddenly feeling ravenously hungry, jelly legs, weakness, feeling hot and my mind going haywire, meh lets just say the usual hehe. It was half an hour before lunch. I was surprised when my BG read 5.8 then 5.7. Huh? I felt this way all afternoon. Even after eating my lunch. I though I might be sick so I tested my ketones but they were 0.4 so no worries there. Has anyone else had a similar experience? Does anyone know why this might happen? Glad I wasn't at work or out and about.

Hello Sugarthat. There are a couple of things that can make you feel hypo when your levels are actually OK.

The first is, if your body has been used to higher levels, (and it might be in your case, if insulin has brought your levels into a better range) your body can give you hypo symptoms just because you're a lot lower than its used to.

Secondly, if your levels are falling rapidly, hypo symptoms can kick in, even though you haven't got to 'official' hypo level.

It's probably your body getting used to lower blood glucose levels than you've had to a while. Sometimes it's the rate of falling, rather than absolute levels that controls how you feel.

Robin and Copepod have said it all. I get the hypo without the hypo feeling - which is scary😱

Thanks for your replies. I was hypoing at 6 in hospital originally and now it's around 4.3 so it was unusual for a 5.8. I'm wondering if they were dropping quickly. I'll keep a closer eye on it if there's a next time. Just needed reassurance it's normal and you've done that so thanks.
