I just had a very strange experience. I was at work and went really hot. I had to get up and open all the windows. I had had my lunch so thought no possibility of a hypo. I had a king prawn salad, 1 hour and 20 mins before. I started to feel the normal signs I get when heading for hypo so tested and was 4.2.

I know 4.2 isn't a hypo, but I am struggling to understand why so low when I have had lunch recently.

I also had all bran as usual for breakfast and my mid morning snack of apples and almonds.

Also, I don't normally go hot with hypo, normally the other way - shivery!

The hypos haven't been as bad lately, although last week for the first time in a long time I had a 2.7 and a 2.5, the latter after mowing the lawn!!

I have been excellent on my diet this week and just wonder if I am being too good, although I have stuck to the 1300 cals advised by the consultant (which accounts for all the exercise I do too). I don't really want to increase the calories as the weight is finally moving downwards again.

Any ideas?🙂

Lucy,

Don't take this the wrong way, but I don't know how old you are? Could you be having a hormonal hot flush, you're speaking to someone who gets them almost on a daily basis now. I'm like you, if I go down into the low 4's, I get shivery and your diet sounds excellent. Sounds to me, like you're on the right track, may just be a blip?

Donna 🙂

Hi Lucy did you have any carbohydrate with the king prawn salad? If not that would probably explain the low sugar

Was wondering the same. Plenty of protein I would imagine. Hot weather can lower BGs, although I'm not entirely sure of the mechanism and how it applies to non-injected insulin.

The synptoms can come on at any point below about 4.5 and I had false symptoms earlier today at 7.4, so could just be the heat making you feel sluggish and tired maybe.🙂

Hi Donna - not taken the wrong way at all🙂
It isn't that though as I had the test recently and came back definitely not the change!
Thanks for thinking though.

Hi - I was wondering regarding the carbs. I am trying to keep my carbs as low as possible as this strangely seems to be helping reduce the number of hypos I was having. (my problem seems to be when my BG's go up they then plummet far too low -thus the hypo;s). I just wonder if there is a fine line between low carb and too low carb in my case. I will monitor it over the next few days and see if any more hypo's. If so, then maybe I will add a bit back in.
Its so hard to know what to do as I am pleased that by lowering the carbs the weight is coming off again and don't want to upset that. However on the other hand hypo's (especially those in the 2's) aren't very nice either.

Thanks for the replies both of you.🙂

Protein lowers the overall GI of a meal, so I wonder if that could affect you in some way, with you being 'special' in the pancreas department (if indeed you still are) 😉:D

In effect, what few carbs there are would be spread thinly over a few hours instead of rising and falling over a couple of hours. Maybe.🙂

Shades of reactive hypoglycemia ?

Have you considered giving up the breakfast wheatybangs in favour of cooked breakfast ( protein & green veg ) ?

( FWIW I started doing this a few months ago with most satisfactory results )

Also possible that your 4.2 reading was a result of your blood glucose climbing back up after being much lower, I occasionally get delayed sweats after I have treated a hypo. Today if eating a similar meal try having a piece of fruit like a apple, orange or small banana afterwards to stop your bg dropping once again.

Thanks again all for the suggestions and tips.

Bolddog - I do try to have something different at weekend, but the cereal box is at work and its so much easier to add my skimmed milk and sweetener, unless you have any suggestions of alternatives for breakfast that I can leave at work🙂

Toby - my hypos tend to be from plummeting from high to low - would I have not known beforehand if I was coming back up? Its a good suggestion though especially regarding the hot and sweaty bit.🙂

Robster - I will always be special!😛
