Didt feel great so asked staff to test my BG at 745am. It was 3.9 so told them i needed hypo treatment They said wait till nurse came to give me my insulin Had normal breakfast of 2 rounds of wholemeal toast with Marmite Nurse came at 855am I told her about the 3.9 She was not happy and told them under 5 and i was to be given treatment straight away not when she came. She tested and BG was 7.6.
First question Soult i speak to manager Monday and ask her to remind all staff of this fact. Or will i be stirring it
Second question had normal feelings of cold, shaky headache however after breakfast i felt hung over, is this normal after a hypo and while your BG is going up
Thanks
Gail

I hope this isn’t a silly or rude question @gail2 but can you not have hypo treatment with you, even if only Dextro tablets?

Yes, I’d speak to the manager. You can say it in a non-complaining, just checking way. If you have a care plan, you could also check it’s written on there and highlighted maybe as something that needs immediate attention.

The manager definitely needs to know: what if it had been 2.9 rather than 3.9? However, it's not really your responsibility: could the nurse tell the manager instead? In fact, I think that the nurse has a responsibility to do so, even without you prompting her.

asked night staff to do again in 20mins she said thats to eargy will test in a hour dont feel good can feel nannas working

Is it possible that your mental health challenges mean that staff don't trust your knowledge of how diabetes affects your body? It sounds to me as if the nurse needs to do a session with the staff (or at least the manager) to explain about diabetes and why they need to be listening to you about it.

Presumably the nurse is advising the staff and so she needs to know about this situation: she has clinical responsibility to check that her instructions are being followed.

They appear to have no knowledge about what is appropriate hypo treatment. It should be spelt out in your care plan and you should certainly have access to hypo treatment that you can have asap when you are hypo.

Bananas are not really a suitable hypo treatment and 2 bananas are far too many carbs in the first instance. Testing again an hour later is also unacceptable. You should be retested 15 mins after you have taken 15g of fast acting glucose. Do you not have a BG meter yourself? What would happen if you had a hypo during the night and were unable to test or treat. This sounds very unsafe!

I often find that I feel worse when I am recovering from a hypo then I did when I first treated it, because you get the effects of the adrenaline release which can feel worse than the hypo itself, but you really should be able to test 15 mins after treatment to check that you are recovering and if not above 4 at that time then you would have another 15g of fast acting carbs.

Sorry but what a daft hypo treatment! Why did you not ask for something else @gail2 ? It doesn’t sound like they know much about hypos. If you feel uncomfortable telling them, this is the guidance from Diabetes U.K. which could show them or have printed out and put in your care plan or by your bed:

How to treat hypoglycaemia

Stop what you are doing and treat the hypo immediately. You can do this by eating or drinking 15 to 20g of a fast-acting carbohydrate — see examples below.

Children will need less than this to treat a hypo. Your child’s diabetes team will advise on the amount of hypo treatment they need. If you use an insulin pump, your treatment may be different, so talk to your diabetes team for advice.

You should rest for 10-15 minutes and then test your blood sugar again to check it is back above 4mmol/l. If it is still less than 4, you should have some more fast-acting carbohydrate and re-test after 10 minutes. Continue to rest until you have recovered from your hypo. Fast-acting carbohydrates for people treating a low blood sugar include:

  • five glucose or dextrose tablets
  • four jelly babies
  • a small glass of a sugary (non-diet) drink (150-200ml)
  • a small carton of pure fruit juice (200ml)
  • two tubes of a glucose gel like GlucoGel® or Rapilose® Gel
  • Glucose juice like Lift Shots®

The “hangover” can happen for me if there is a rapid rise of over treatment afterwards? But really your care workers should not delay in helping you treat your hypo. You showed great presence of mind asking for help. in my experience it’s better to have sweets with you to shoot first & worry about the questions, later? Your nurse was quite right in the displeasure regarding your care worker’s actions. There needs to be a decisive plan of action put in place if this happens again.
