Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
While Hyderabad already has the dubious distinction of being the diabetes capital of India, new research has shown more evidence of the differences in human genetic variations in people of this region contributing to type 2 diabetes.

Population studies in the city found that two genetic polymorphisms found consistently in Western diabetics ? and also in North India ? were not associated with diabetes here.

Researchers from the city-based Indian Statistical Institute and other institutions studied diabetics in the city for the roles of two genes which are involved in the insulin secretion process.

Type 2 diabetes is basically caused by impairment in insulin secretion and action. Variations in the two genes, IGF2BP2 and SLC30A8, both of which are involved in insulin secretion, were studied for occurrence in Hyderabad populations.
