A woman died in severe pain two hours after an NHS Direct nurse told her she did not need an ambulance and should take painkillers, an inquest heard.

Gillian Given, 58, a former nursing sister, died at her home in Belgrano, near Abergele, Conwy, on July 16 last year after suffering a heart attack.

When she started suffering crippling stomach pains, her worried husband James, a former pub landlord, contacted their GP and was told to ring NHS Direct Wales.
