Hi All,

I'm a type 2 diabetic diagnosed in September this year. Hardly unexpected as there's plenty of family history and I'm a middle-aged male carrying far, far too much fat around his middle (about 6 stone of it), and had plenty of symptoms in the month prior (thirst, urination, blurry vision etc). Despite expecting it, my initial readings were pretty shockingly high - fasting 13.4, HbA1c 108 (12%).😱

After the initial chat with the doc and the diabetes nurse I did what I expect most people do - simply cut out the sweet stuff and back a bit on the portions, plus extra walking, and put on 2x500mg Metformin a day. Lost about half a stone quickly then plateaued, even put a bit back on.😱

Then about 10 days ago I got round to buying a testing kit. First test 2h after lunch, 6.6 - result! However, next morning my fasting glucose was 9.0 which I found quite depressing. Finally shaken into action I read a lot of info on the 'net and as a result have really tried to shape up. Doubled the walking, cut all forms of carbs right back (to about half what my 6-year-old daughter eats), testing every morning and sometimes in between, and fewer "a little bit of this can't harm" treats. The good news is that I'm seeing my fasting glucose drop every morning, through the 8s and today a new low of 7.2 so feeling more confident about my HbA1c due in December.🙂

Nice to meet you all, see you around the forum,

Gary

Well done, you really sound like you know what you're doing and are definitely heading in the right direction. Hopefully your message will inspire a lot of other people to do the same as you.

Hi Gary, welcome to the forum 🙂 It sounds like you are really getting to grips with things - well done on managing to reduce your levels by carefully adapting your diet, increasing activity and using your meter to help inform your decisions! If there is anything we can do to help, please let us know - nothing is considered 'silly' 🙂

I look forward to hearing more from you and hope the improvements continue! 🙂

Hi Gary love the username by the way, well done it sounds like you are taking the bull by the horns x

p.s Welcome

Welcome to the forums Gary 🙂

Hello Gary, welcome to the forums and I hope you leave those bulls alone, their horns can be very dangerous :D

Thanks

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I'm just glad to have somewhere to spout off as my wife already thinks I'm turning into a "diabetes bore"! :D

Yours too eh:D Its when their eyes just glaze over.:D Hi Gary, welcome to the forum, sounds like your doing really well.

Welcome Gary.

Good to hear that you've doubled your walking as well as tackling your diet. All depends how much walking you're doing - double might still not be very much. Many people aim for 10,000 steps per day - approx 3 miles. Replacing journeys in vehicles with engines with cycling as well as walking is also worthwhile for both your health and environmental benefits. Without knowing where you life, I do realise that cycling isn't as easy in all areas, but it's usually more practical, with the right waterproof & reflective kit & lights, than most people think.

"a little bit of this can't harm" treats! Ha Ha I love it! I'm terrible with these... I have waay too many but I'm working on it!! Welcome 🙂 (I'm new too!)
