So i seen my diabetic team today. I have changed my long acting insulin from lantus to levemir so I can split the dose.

I have also changed the Novorapid to Humulin S as I eat a lower carb diet with more protein now.
Novo isn't doing the job as it requires too many injections to cover protein/fat meals.

I was recommended by other low carb'ers to get Humulin R or regular insulin as they call it, but the specialist told me this wasn't available and said only Humulin S was.

My question is does anyone know whether these are the same insulin or rebranded?

I don’t know @aaronjunited but Humulin S appears to be a regular short-acting insulin so should suit your purpose. It has a similar profile of action to Actrapid and Hypurin Porcine Neutral 🙂 You’ll find the profile different from NR - not just a slower onset, but a different profile later too, so watch your blood sugar closely as you get used to it.

Yea it looks to be the replacement for R here in the UK. Not sure just yet. Though that is good news anyhow that it's on the similar profile of Actrapid and Hypurin. I will definitely keep an eye on it's effects to begin with for sure.

It comes as a cartridge I hear. Not sure how those work.

A cartridge is just what you put in an insulin pen. Make sure you’ve got a pen that fits the Humulin S cartridges. Not all insulin pens fit every insulin cartridge.

I think the Humapen Savvio takes Humulin cartridges.

They asked me what colour I wanted. Does the chemist give these out when getting first prescription of new insulin?

It will need to be on your prescription. Then the chemist will hand it over with your insulin. Don’t assume your GP has added the pen to the prescription. I had to ask for mine. Yes, it’s in different colours - ice blue, red and possibly one or more other colours.

Ok Ice blue was the colour I chose. I definitely wont be assuming they have sorted it. I will phone them tomorrow to see what is happening with the pen.
