Hi there,

Haven't been feeling too clever this weekend as I have a urinary tract infection. Doctor put me on a 3 day course of antibiotics 300mg so pretty strong and recommended that I stay off the Met for those 3 days. I have been testing regularly and my morning average has been 7.6. However after 2 slices of brown toast my numbers have gone up to a massive 16.2. What on earth is going on. I still feel as if I have the infection would this make my numbers go sky high like this? I have taken the last antibiotic and will re-commence the met this evening with my meal.

Advice would be greatly appreciated as I'm now panicking. First fasting reading was 7.9 at 7.00am this morning. One hour later after eating 2 large slices of toast with a bit of cheese 16.2??

p.s. Have also been advised to take Cranberry juice. O/h brought home organic - I presume it's better to take something like this which is going to help me and just go with the spikes?

Donna

Can't advise, I'm afraid. I have yet to have any sort of infection since my diagnosis (that's torn it!!).

I hope you get over yours soon.

However, I would take any reading you get for the next week or so with a 'pinch of salt'. (that sounds suspiciously like advice to me though!).

Take care,

Andy 🙂

Hi DOnna

Your BGs will be high due to any infection but should return to lower once it clears up.

Not sure wy you need to stop the metformin but the doctor must have a reason for it. I presume that will push your numbers up a bit too.

But as a temporary thing, with a reason for it, I would just try to ride through the highs for now and try to eat whatever you think will cause less of a spike (on that I can't advise).🙂

If you're concerned at any time, obviously go back to your doctor.

Sorry you're feeling rubbish, I'm literally dreading my first infection post Dx.

Just wanted to say that there is sugar free cranberry juice (I bought some in case of a Woo Woo urge, not yet tried it!), or alternatively cranberry tablets. I would assume both would be less likely to spike you on top of your infection as at least you're not pouring sugary drink in too. I'm also assuming they will be just as effective as the full sugar version.

Hope you feel better soon xx

Go back and see doc and ask why you can't take metformin with medication for urinary infection. Some medications do fight each other. I would also suggest you keep sugar free liquids up too, plenty of plain water will help flush kidneys and bladder and help clear infection out.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the advice. Still feeling a bit ropey but after my initial shock of 16.2 after breakfast, 2 hours later down to 8.2 and now 7.4 before late lunch.

I got such a shock as I haven't seen numbers like that since my initial diagnosis. Must be the infection!

Donna 🙂

I'm thinking because some AB's give you an upset tummy. If you add metformin maybe it's guaranteed? - but I don't know if this is the reason your doc had, for you.

I would go back anyway if that doesn't start to come down tomorrow, if I were you. How is a person expected to fight ANY bug with a BG of 16?
