Hi All,

Type 1 diabetic for 20 year's now, never took much care of myself in my younger day's,however as I am older I have got a lot more in control of my Diabete's and am generally doing well.
I am currently going through hell with Retinopathy however I hope to ask some question's on here and make some new friend's and learn from some of your experience's to help me along a bit.

Massive Manchester Utd fan and am going to the game on Sunday when hopefully Chelsea come a cropper and I can see the trophy handed to the team in red!!

All retinopathy storie's/advice very much welcome and any football banter will be equally well received!

Look forward to talking to you all soon

Hi there Max and welcome to the forum myself i am a type 2 and was diagnosed back in Feb 09, i dont have any retionopathy stories as both times my results have come back fine, but wanted to say hello.I am a massive footy fan and support both Newcastle united and arsenal so pleased to see a fellow footy fan is onboard

Hi Max, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear about the retinopathy. We do have quite a few people here with experience of it at various stages, and also of treatment, so hopefully you will find something that will help 🙂

I studied the eye in detail as part of an applied optics course when I did my degree. Also having been treated for cataracts just over three years ago I have experience of eye problems although of a different type. I have spoken at length with my ophthalmic consultant about diabetes and eyes. There is a piece of research that suggests that the prevention of problems is just not about control but about the type of control. Therefore if you achieve an HbA1c of 6.5 but your blood sugars vary between 3 and 15 this is worse that an HbA1c of 7.0 but with blood sugars between 4 and 9. Nothing is simple with diabetes I am afraid!

Hi Max,

I worry that Chelsea are not going to slip up, I'm afraid. But one can always hope!!

I'm sorry to hear about your retinopathy problems too.

I hope that you get the help you need here (plus any sympathetic shoulders after Sunday!). 😉

Andy 🙂

Hi Andy,
I too have been diabetic T1 for years and years now and like you was a naughty person back in my teens and twenties!

Sorry to hear about the retinopathy. The wonders of modern science an all is that if they catch these things they can then help you to manage it. Why are you going through hell?

I have got background retinopathy but trying to keep at that. I only got it after my daughter was born 4 years ago - i am sure there is a link in there somewhere! But, I have been diabetic for 27 years so I feel as i am upright and breathing I am doing alright!

Anyways i like my rugby more than football but all the best Saturday

Bernie 🙂

Hi Andy.
I'm a 'blues' fan but what i call a 'sunny day fan'. If we win i watch; If we lose i don't bother 'cause then it's a waste of my time!
I am hoping United are feeling generous this season - you guys have won it a lot more after all. But United are such a good side they can never be ruled out. That of course is the sign of a successful side.

Hope you keep the eye problem at bay/ get it sorted out. I've also had some background retinopathy and i'm trying to do the same.

Best of luck for Saturday.

Hi Max,

I'm in my forties and have had diabetes since I was nine.

I spent a rough four or five years going through laser treatment for proliferative retinopathy.
I had a number of large bleeds in both eyes, though thankfully not at the same time.
I've had in excess of 4000 lasers to each eye and I have lost my driving licence due to the laser treatment causing me to fail the DVLA fields test.
I wil not be able to drive again but I've got used to it now and it doesn't really affect my life. It's a bit inconvenient but that's all.
Things have settled down now and I aven't had any further activity or bleeds for over two and half years. Saw the opthalmologist yesterday and all is fine -I go back in six months.
So keep your head up, I'm sure things will get better for you.

I moved onto a pump a couple of months ago and my control has improved enormously, so that will hopefull help in keeping the retinopathy at bay. If you're still on MDI and are having problems with control then it may be worth asking your diabetes care team about the possibility of moving to a pump.

If you want to chat about retinopathy, the laser treatment, the pump or anything else, then just shout.

Oh, I am also a United fan and will be at the match on Sunday.
And, I notice that you are in Bristol - my wife is originally from Bristol and has family there.

Diabetes AND a Man U supporter? How unlucky can you get.

I live in Manchester so obviously follow Man City. Work in Stretford just across the road from Old Trafford - cricket ground.
