How to treat a cut on foot

I was brought up by my late Mum not to bother Doctors a habit i find hard to break although I often seek advice from pharmacists. This morning I went downstairs in bare feet. I chucked out some worn slippers a few days ago and haven't replaced them yet. I managed to come into contact with the sharp lid of an empty soup can. I was sorting out recycling for bin tomorrow. Basically careless and unlucky.

I have a cut about 3 cm long between the right handside of my left heel and my ankle. I used antiseptic wound wash. Covered surrounding area with sudocream. I bled bright red blood briefly. I had several wound pads and held one onto wound. I then used some steri strips and put clean wound pad over cut and anchored it with zinc oxide tape.

How often should I check it? Should I check with the surgery maybe a nurse.

I'm nervous because it's the first significant cut I've had since my diabetes diagnosis although I had a worse cut the month before I was diagnosed when my hand slipped when I was using secateurs on some ivy and I cut my thumb. It did heal although I have a scar.

Any advice welcome. I am reluctant to bother the surgery but am tempted!

I am going to buy some new slippers.

Do you have a Minor Injuries Clinic in your area? When I cut myself with secateurs a while ago I went to ours and they cleaned and dressed it.

There is a walk in clinic in the neighbouring city where I went when I had an exceptionally sore finger which the nurse who i had an appointment with for something else couldn't be bothered with. I had osteomylitis and blood pressure 198 over 103.
I'm nervous because of my diabetes. I treated myself for my secateur injury.
I think I've cleaned and covered it well. It's not painful but think I might become a worry guts!
My surgery is 10 minutes walk away.

Better to go to the walk in and it turn out to not be a problem than not go and it turn into a big problem in the future

go get it cheqed out hun best be on the safe side

Glad to hear you made an appointment. These days if I have anything more than a superficial wound on my feet/lower legs, I would get it checked. Even minor scratches and grazes seem to take much longer to heal now.
Hope it all goes well.

Glad you were able to get it checked out @saffron15

Sounds like you had treated it sensibly yourself, but we do have to look after our tootsies!

Do you get your feet and pulses checked at your annual reviews? (Foot and lower-leg pulses should be felt, and a filament test for sensitivity). Some nurses seem to skip these tests, so do ask for them if your annual review is winding down and they haven’t happened.

If you start to lose sensitivity and blood flow in your feet, they become much more vulnerable.

I’m glad mine have remained fiercely sensitive so far!

Glad you got it checked out.
I sometimes wish my feet were less sensitive, as I'm like the princess and the pea if I have the tiniest wrinkle in my sock or grain of something in my shoe. But at least I know that means there's no nerve damage, so I'm grateful!

The nurse dressed it and included iodine. She said it looked fine. She offered antibiotics which I've refused but if it appears infected I will change my mind. I have another appointment on Tuesday as I'm hoping I may be told I can go to aquafit next Wednesday
