How this little gadget could be a real lifesaver for people with diabetesKeeping insulin shots regular is vital for the long term, writes Shane Hickey

FOR anyone who has to deal with diabetes on a daily basis, over-injecting is a concern.

A few years ago, John Hughes, who has had the condition for two decades, finished his evening meal and thought for a minute about whether he had taken his regular injection due at the time via his insulin pen.

Mistakenly thinking he had not, he took another injection and headed out for a walk with the dog in the nearby Rathfarnham park.

Fifteen minutes later, he collapsed in a hypoglycemic episode -- or hypo -- where he blacked out and injured himself before being found by his wife who had become concerned that he had not returned home.
