Being poorly today I had no brekkie so did not do my first test till 11 0 clock it was 6.0 I then at 11.45 had a bowl of carrott soup with white pepper and tested myself 1 hour later and was 11.6,goodness me it was only a bowl of soup I did not expect that much of a rise.I had absolutly nothing in my tummy until that soup.Im just curious to know how fast spikes arise, any ideas?

Similar things happen to me often! You'll probably find the carrott soup full of sugar? Also if you're ill your going to be running higher than norm. And lack of breakfast is a no no according to the dietician I saw since I do find if I skip brekky my post-meal reading is higher. I guess we need something to work on before 🙂

I suppose it was only a bad tummy did'nt think that would play a part.I never skip brekkie but my tummy was so bad i could not stomach anything

Yeah I understand when that happens it sucks. I had a lactose intolerance attack just yesterday! But thats what an ordinary person would do! Just skip brekkie, so why can't we... :(

Did you check how many carbs you had ? The other thing is that if the soup was pureed then the carbs in the soup can get into your blood stream faster than if say the carrots were in chunks.

I worked out about 12-13 carbs wise.
Gr it was a mates soup as she brings it in via a thermos, I just assumed feeling sick turn to the good old soup option.

Dear Steff,

It's a bummer to find such a rise, but a quick calc shows that if you had no beta-cell function at all the rise with 13 g of glucose (again a rough estimate) would be a delta of 14.4mmol/L. As margie says pureed food is the best way possible to get blood sugar into your blood stream rapidly. So:
1. You still have beta cells that work and
2. The value you read was probably close to the maximum - you may have even been on the way down!

Just out of interest, how do you calculate that Dodger?

Dear Mark,

Here it is: 13000mg/50dL = 260mg/dL divide by 18 gives 14.4mmol/L Delta. Yes, I've corrected my original post - just back from cutting the lawn and realised my idiot mistake. On average we have 5L of blood in our body.
