Try the book Carbs & Cals by Chris Cheyette

It gives you pictures of different sized portions together with the amount of carbs and cals for each portion

Welcome to the forum @GrandUnion

As you have T2 Diabetes, your body is not able to process the amount of glucose in your blood stream effectively. This could be that your pancreas doesn’t make enough insulin to match the carbs you eat, or that the insulin you make doesn’t work well enough to deal with the glucose.

There are no hard and fast rules about how much to eat, but in the simplest terms if you can start to find out how many carbs you are eating at each meal, you can then reduce these either by swapping to lower carb options, or by reducing your portion sizes. Increasing the level of activity can also use up some of the glucose.

It is important to remember that all carbs you eat will become glucose once it is inside you. This is not just sugars, so look at the total carbs. If you are cooking from scratch then Carbs and Cals can be helpful or I just keep a list of the number of Grammys of carbs in different foods per 100g and weigh whatever we cook.

We realised that we were eating quite a lot of carbs at each meal and chose to reduce it. As a T1 I have to match my injection to the amount of carbs so this reduced my doses. It seemed difficult at the start but now we are used to the swaps and portion sizes and is just normal for us.

I hope that helps

The dietician based at the UHCW Diabetes clinic at Rugby, who with the 2 DSNs there underwent the training to deliver their 'carb counting and dose adjustment' course for Type 1s, told us that the protein part of the meal should be approx the size of a pack of playing cards. As much 'above ground' veg as you can get on the plate, carbs approx same size as protein.

The carb portion also depends on how active or inactive you are. Ie a builder will need more of everything than a person who spends a lot of time at home for instance. The Carbs and Cals book is great for guidance on carb count and portion sizes.

I split the discussion of carbs and neanderthals etc away from this newcomers thread to keep this thread on topic 🙂
