It varies from person to person depending on your needs. When I was on lantus SR insulin I was on 120 units a day

Thank's for that Gail I just had no Idea as I am increasing it myself untill I get to a reasonable level if 10 or 100 or even 500 units is ok to take.
I feal a bit more safe and secure now I know .

Hi paul

As Gail said it's individual

But how come you seem to be using 2 different doses 24 or 26?

With background insulin you take the same dose at the same time every day, in your case you should be either taking 24 or 26 once a day..

This is because when you adjust a dose then it can take a couple of days to show it's true effect on the blood glucose levels.. Adjusting the amounts and/or time on a daily bases just faffs everything up

Paul dont take this the wrong way but you are doing this with your dns/gps knowledge? Changing your dosage on your own can be a very risky and dangerous thing to do.Take this from someone who messed about with her insulin and ended up in hospital as a result.

Perhaps he is splitting the dose? Just a thought.

I split my lantus. I have 12 in the morning and 8 in the evening. It's not uncommon. 🙂

Well paul does say once a day!

Hence why I asked, as I used to have my background in a split dose pre-pump days!

That's very true. Perhaps Paul could clarify. 🙂

No 24 or 26 units of glargine a day isn't to much, I was told that the average dose for basal insulin is one unit for every hour in the day, so 24 is a good steady figure.

I take 38 units in the morning. If you have only recently started taking insulin you would normally start on something small say 10 units and increase by 2 units every 3 days until you start to maintain a reasonable BG level. That's what my DSN did when I was first put on insulin.

I think there's some sort of formula they use relating to your weight/build for the initial dose, although I confounded that one by putting on three stones after diagnosis and went from 20 units of lantus to 3 instead of the other way round! I've heard of people on 200 or more, so it can really vary from person to person - too much is if it gives you hypos, not enough is if your levels are above range 🙂

Sorry all . I only take it once a day I am on 24 units and now about to increase to 26 units once a day sorry for the confusion and yes it was my GP's idea to just slowly increase until I reach the correct readings.

Thank's

Thank you all for all you help I feel as if I am on the right road.
