Hi all, I'm new here and was wondering as a borderline diabetic with blurred vision issues after consuming too much sugar, how many grams should I use as a guideline to stay heart and eye safe. As at present I'm guessing. Also ive been told that stevia is ok for diabetes but I think I'm also affected by stevia.

I'm afraid there is no set answer to this, also it is not just sugar that we have to be wary of, its total carbohydrates x

Hi Angelic
Afraid I don't know anything about Stevia but regarding sugar - why have any at all? There's plenty of the stuff in many natural forms - fruit, veg, meat - there really is no need to add any. Since I was diagnosed type 2 a few months ago, I've knocked sweets, chocs and added sugar in any form on the head as far as poss.

Ok thanks Graham, I have given up most sweet things too but as potatoes, bread and most everything contains a form of sugar I thought there may be a magic number. At the moment my eyes are acting as a guide when my vision is really blurred and I really can not see much I know ive had to much. And ill be then more careful until my vision has returned to normal non blurred. .

We all have different tolerances to foods and what affects some doesn't others. You have to find away of eating that you can maintain long term. Some time it is not what you eat it is the amount.

Do you have a Blood Glucose meter? That's the best way of finding out how the carbohydrates affect you and what might be your personal level.

There are also other things that effect our BG's on a daily basis such as stress, weather & illness, so it's not just food that messes with us.🙂

Hi Angelic,

I'm afraid that this is a somewhat complicated issue, even 3 years in I'm still learning.

The basic issue is that we are insulin resistant, some people are affected more than others & some carbs will have differing affects on different people. The only way (despite what the medical profession says) is to test our BG regularly:
  • First thing in the morning (Fasting Blood Glucose). Gives you a baseline for the day
  • Before a meal (gives a baseline for the meal)
  • 2 hours after the meal (looking for a rise of no more than 2-3mmol)
  • Optionally different intervals after a meal (e.g. 1 hour), this will determine if some foods are spiking your BG unacceptably
  • Whenever you are feeling a little 'off'
This is a lot to take in to start with but starting the process of evaluating will make it easier to evaluate the results & fine tune your diet, of course we are here to help.An example of a typical day may be:
  • FBG 6.5
  • Before Eating Lunch 7.0
  • 2 Hours after lunch 7.5
  • Before Dinner 6.5
  • 2 hours after dinner 9.5 (Ooops, shouldn't have had those potatoes)
My Day (so far, given that it's noon where I live)
  • FBG 5.5 (Note that I'm a very well controlled diabetic)
  • Forgot to test before my morning treat of 3 Empanadas on the way home from having blood tests
  • 10.5 1.5 hours after eating (something tells me that I should probably not be having those empanadas or at least only 2 but it's hard when I've got to share with 3 dogs) I'll test in another 15 minutes
  • UPDATE at pretty much 2 hours after eating I am 9.5, still too high but I still don't know what I was before eating, probably 6ish
  • UPDATE 2:15 after eating 8.5

I can see you have gone from 78 to 38 is that because of the medication. This is very helpful how do you get a blood glucose machine. I had a free check in my local library and my result was high 48. The guy said he would contact my Gp but my Gp never gave me anything to reduce my levels or advise a diet change or make a connection with the issues I was having with my vision and sight.

Your best option is to self-fund, the SD Codefree from Amazon has been reported as the best affordable option. Your GP is unlikely to issue on (but it's worth trying, especially if you have a plan on how o use the results). I'm fortunate in that I live in the States & they have no issue with prescribing meters; we can even get them over the counter

I will check those out on amazon and hopefully purchase one shortly. I'm in the UK and have had no real help with symptoms, not even advice apart from one guy that was testing for free.
