I'm on a low carb diet and have lost weight nicely,I'm now planning forward to a time when I will need to maintain weight, can anyone tell me how you work out how much fat you would need to consume to provide energy and maintain weight,I have visions of eating bag after bag after bag of expensive nuts and avacados that turn brown in the fridge and end up getting thrown out,I suppose I would be doing this and avoiding saturated fats as much as I could so healthy fats,Is this achievable on a tight budget.
Will there come a time when you can up the carbs but be sensible with potion sizes and then maintain and not worry about utilising the high fat diet as your fuel?

If it's achievable by having a bag of nuts spread through the day looking at the sainsburys website a bag of 200grams of walnuts would provide 130g of fat, that would be fine and I would just need to find the cheapest place to buy them and wouldn't have to worry about finding other sources of fat, that's just an idea,I like to keep my life simple
Have just read about nuts and phytic acid, maybe the bag of nuts isnt the best idea then

I am several years from diagnosis and these days I can eat more carbs without raised blood glucose, just instant weight gain.

Thanks @Drummer I wondered that about weight gain,so do you stick mainly to the low carb then to keep a static weight then?

I have been trying to keep to low carb all my adult life, but - because 'carbs are so healthy' - I have been given diet sheets which only make me gain weight or in some circumstances, collapse.
Eating low carb is my normal - I stay the same weight but I am becoming smaller in volume.

Lidl do large bags of nuts at reasonable prices, you have to be careful with portioning though.

I have lidl wallnuts at the moment, they are very .low in carbs but very high in fat, 100g is 3.7g carbs and 69.1g fat.
I usually just have a handful (about 6 whole wallnuts) for snack or extra with lunch. If I buy cashews or pine nuts I find them difficult to stop eating and would consume excessive amounts to requirements 🙂 I personally think, just don't over do it in any one food type except salads :D

I know what you mean,I have had to put them out of sight,I think I will have them between luch and dinner for fuel

I find this tool from the US Dept of Health useful for estimating how many calories to eat, given weight target and exercise level:
https://www.niddk.nih.gov/bwp

And then you have about 9 calories per gram of fat and about 4 calories per gram of carbs or protein (if I'm not mistaken).

I've found that I can eat lots more carbs now without it having much BG impact, compared to when I was first diagnosed.

I've never noticed the source of calories - fat, carbs, protein - making any difference when it comes to weight gain or loss.

PS: For another concentrated source of unsaturated fats, think about seeds - flax seeds, chia seeds, whatever.

Cheers Eddy,I will have a look at that,do you happen to know who sells seeds at a reasonable price,I hadn't thought about them before

Sorry, I'm in Oz! But here supermarkets generally have a good selection at OK prices.

the Carb and Cal counter book shows them in 10 and 30g portions, so tend to go with 30g which is quite a big handful, about 9-10 brazils and around 24 almonds.
