How long will DVLA take to process a med declaration?

Hi all,

I have posted my medical declaration off confirming my type 1 diabetes diagnosis. I drive for work and their insurers need to the DVLA's confirmation before they will insure me.

I spoke with the DVLA and they confirmed it could take up to 3 weeks to get the declaration on the system and may then need to go back to my doctor for further info.

Does anyone have a rough idea how long this process may take? Or, whether an insurer will take confirmation of the declaration receipt as proof that I am ok to drive?

Many thanks,

Luke

Mine came through very quickly, like, a few days, but I think it depends on whether they are satisfied with the info given in the original application, or whether they want to make further enquiries. Then, if they do make further enquiries, it depends on how quickly your medical team answer them. So, hard to say, I’m afraid!

I've been driving since the 1970s and renew my license every 3 years.

I sent off my forms early May - and I'm still waiting.

My license actually expired on 30th June - but the DVLA say I can still drive if no doctor has told me not to. They haven't.

Apparently that have written twice to my consultant - but he's not replied!

Err - do you think you ought to chase your consultant?

Don`t get stopped by the Police, especially ANPR.

DVLA have sent my new licence! Success!

Did chase them nigh on daily mind. Thanks for your replies.

My last one was only a week but a friend's took nearly two months and had run out for over two weeks. He has no idea why it took so long. After four weeks he rang up to be told they were persuing their investigations. I do wonder if they randomly make more detailed enquires as a week turnaround barely gives them any time!

If it's late being issued then you can ask for a letter confirming you're still OK to drive BUT NB this only applies in the UK - and they cannot tell you whether it's OK to drive abroad or not, either inside the EU or otherwise.

I contacted the DVLA and suggested that they contact the nurse who I actually see every time rather than the consultant I've not seen for over 4 years!

Good job I'm not wanting to hire a car or anything like that!

The letter I got telling me about the delay does say I'm ok, and I can show it if required.

It is interesting how things change. When I first hired a car they would refer things back to their insurers but now they just check your licence and NI number. Annoying thing was removal of C1 and D over twenty years ago!

Yeah - I felt a bit bereft losing my C1 (never had a D) ….. not that I'd ever wanted or needed to drive anything that size, but that's not the point, is it? I could have if I had, and now I can't. LOL

Husband was 70, 18 months ago - and decided to keep his C1. I quite liked the fact that he had - he reckons he's different to me cos his was for practical reasons obviously - absolutely not vanity! (We do own a motorhome but have never had one heavier than 3500 kg. But you never know, we MIGHT buy one! = Practical LOL)

When I did voluntary work with The Boys' Brigade back in the 80s and 90s, I drove minibuses, transit vans, Luton vans and even a 7 ton truck.

Had to give all that up when they removed those categories.

So now, I can't drive an empty van yet I can drive a 7 seater car with children in it!

Two weeks on - still no license.

I called the consultant's secretary and she confirmed that he had replied weeks ago!.

Last year I was legally bound to tell the DVLA I had been diagnosed with progressive MS from start to finish it took 12 weeks. Some of it was due to someone with half a brain deciding that once the paperwork/enquiries had been completed it would be a good idea for me to fill in my diabetes forms 6 months early so all boxes ticked. No idea why it couldn't have all been done from the beginning but heigh-ho on Christmas eve my new licence arrived in the post.

I advised DVLA 4 weeks ago and a letter came yesterday saying they had completed their medical review and I have to send them my licence back as it is being revoked and a new medical licence will be issued for 3 years.

That is usual for people on Insulin.

Once you go onto a "medical" licence new licences tend to be for three years although they may be for s shorter period. I assume you were not on insulin previously. The new licence will also be minus groups C1 and D. These can be added but have a far more rigourous medical and only last a year.

We have to accept these rules but my main beef are licences to 70 with no further checks in that period. Surely a ten yearly fitness statement should be needed as a minimum.
