hi im not sure if im going to be new here or not (if this makes sense) went to my docs a few week ago feelin a little unwell an he suggested he run some tests as well as some routine blood tests as i havnt had any in a few years, so one of the blood tests was a Random glucose test an i was contacted the next day to ask to go for a fasting glucose test so i went for them an the nurse told me to phone up the day after for the results as they came in quickly so i phoned to check an the doctor hadnt looked at them yet, so to cut a long story short as of thursday tea time the doctor still hadnt looked at the results yet an it has been over a week, an in this week my curious mind has been looking on websites an it appears i have some symptoms of type 2, distinctly increased thirst all the time and going to the loo alot but i just assumed i was going to the loo because i was drinking alot more due to the thirst.

ive got to go back to my GP in a weeks time any way so ill find out then but im quite annoyed that the GP Hasnt even looked at the results yet.

would like to say tho i have read alot of comments on here and it has made me realise the seriousness of diabetes as the government paint a bad picture of it, statistically im over weight and have the increased risk of getting it but ill start by following diet plans so hopefully the doc will say i dont have it an i can take action now to make sure i dont.

your all doing a good job just by telling your stories and experiences by people reading it an raising awareness. hope you all have good control over yor own conditions for many more years to come.

Hi and welcome
Time for diagnosis - well, it depends - you'll hear that a lot with regards to diabetes, as with so much else in life.
My guess is that the GP will look at your results and give you the results when you come in - it's not good practice to give diagnosis or confirmation of non-diagnosis over the phone. Let us know how you get on. You're right to say that much of diabetes is in your own hands - weight management, diet and exercise are all equally important - but it's also worth trying to get as much information, courses etc from health services.

Hello there,

I hope that you get good news when you see your GP and that you never return here (in the nicest possible way, of course!).

But, in case the news isn't good, you'll get lots of good advice here.

Andy

Your story sounds very similar to mine. Went to the docs feeling generally unwell, mainly permanently exhausted, recurring infections. Doctor arranged for general blood test including glucose test, though his diagnosis on the spot was that they would all be fine and that I was just depressed! Glucose test came back high, was asked back for fasting blood test, still high so then had glucose tolerance test. I had to call the surgery three times, each time being told that the doctor hadn't looked at the results yet. Eventually the receptionist rang back to say that the doctor needed to see me, by which time I had basically diagnosed myself! In all it took three weeks from initial appointment to diagnosis but that was only with me persisting. If you're worried call back and insist on talking to the doctor or arranging for him to call you back. Am now waiting for appointemnts to see the dietician and diabetes nurse so they can confirm whether it's type 1 or 2 (although I'm sure it will be type 2). Hope you get better news than me!

Hi sugar I would echo what copepod said i think it would be bad practice if they diagnosed you over the phone , personally i was given the GT test and then went back in a week later and got the news your diabeic, I do hope you get good news and you dont have to come back on here (no offence). If you do though we are a great bunch , all walks of lives and all with diffirent levels of expereice from the newly diagnosed to the ones diagnosed 30+ years.

Hi Sugar, I had my diagnosis really quickly (days)... the downside not only was I told over the phone but I was in work at the time! Hope all goes well with your doctors appointment.

Lynda

Hi Sugar, welcome to the forum.

When I called for the results of the fasting glucose the receptionist confirmed I was diabetic but said I would have to wait 3 weeks to see the Dr who was the practice specialist.

He turned out not to be so specialist and I managed to get an appointment earlier than that.

Hope things work out for you
