How long between blood test and diagnosis??

Hi everyone,

Beginning of this month I had first H1 test and it was 48, then doc said next test on 17th , had the test 49, appointment not until Tuesday 1st.

For ages I've been having to go bathroom during the night 3 -4 times a night, and drinking like a fish.

Just wondered if having to wait from 18th June to 1st of July is a long wait, and it's only telephone appointment?

Welcome @DystopianFuture 🙂 That doesn’t seem too long a wait to me. The diagnosis line is an HbA1C of 48 or over so you can see that you just into the diabetes zone. You could look at the Learning Zone (orange tab at the top of this page) and make some dietary changes while you’re waiting for your appointment.

Yes just over the diagnostic threshold so some dietary changes and a bit more exercise if you can should mean medication should not be needed. You should have an eye retinal screening appointment arranges and an appointment usually with a nurse at the surgery for a foot check and weight, blood pressure recorded. It would be usual to have another HbA1C after 3 months to check your lifestyle changes have been effective.
There is no need for panic but does need to be taken seriously. Have a look at this link as it has some good ideas, explanation and menu plans for a low carbohydrate approach which may have found successful at reducing blood glucose and losing weight if needed. If you have a read that may prompt you with questions for your GP. https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/

At 48/49 it’s not an emergency, you already knew diabetes was a likelihood and so there’s no need for an urgent appointment to diagnose it. They’ll probably let you know on the phone call that you have T2 diabetes and arrange a follow up with the diabetes nurse.

... doctor thinks I can reverse it to prediabetes ....

Maybe you can go one better than the doctor thinks! Could you do with losing a bit of weight?

Meanwhile, if you haven't seen it, have a look at Dr David Unwin's Diet Sheet; simple advice to keep your blood glucose under control by eating nutritious food. He has had a 95%+ success with pre-diabetics and borderline T2Ds

You may also find Freshwell's Meal Planner and Red, Amber, Green Food Lists helpful.

I've lost weight in my face and arms and legs but gained it in the waist? I could I guess with eating a better diet as the doc was saying (high protein, low carb) I'm 17st 8lb, but at 6ft tall on a good day :D that's how I lost weight last time.

Thanks again all!

What is important is finding a dietary regime which is enjoyable otherwise it will not be sustainable which it needs to be otherwise people get this yoyoing of weight loss then putting it back on sometimes even more than they lost.
The low carb I find is a sustainable new way of eating.
The other thing is portion control alongside your new way.

Welcome to the forum @DystopianFuture

It’s fairly common for Drs to want a confirmation HbA1c to ensure that a diagnosis is solid - especially where results are a bit ‘on the edge’.

Glad you’ve got clarity now, and can make some positive changes to reduce your BG levels
