The former international boss of whisky and Guinness maker Diageo is hoping to lift spirits in the NHS as the chief executive of private medical group Bupa. Stuart Fletcher, who joined from Diageo in March last year, wants to take advantage of Government health reforms under which GPs buy services.
The changes had a rocky parliamentary passage as doctors, politicians and patient groups protested about creeping privatisation of the NHS.
Health secretary Andrew Lansley was moved after the legislation underwent surgery to ease concerns that it would spark a profit bonanza for private firms.
Fletcher acknowledged fears that it may force people to pay directly for health care but said they were unfounded. He said: ?I want to keep the NHS. It?s brilliant but it could get a lot better and we can help. We don?t compete with the NHS, we complement it.?
