Metformin is a type of oral medication used to treat type 2 diabetes ? and according to Gary Scheiner, CDE, in his book, ?Until There is a Cure,? metformin is the most prescribed medication for type 2 diabetes, and one of those most widely used drugs in the world. Scheiner even adds that type 1 diabetics struggling with insulin resistance and high blood sugars can benefit from taking metformin!

The brand names for metformin are Glucophage and Riomet Liquid.

While there are a variety of oral medications to help people with type 2 diabetes reduce their blood sugar levels, they all work very differently in the body. Scheiner explains exactly how metformin works on page 81 of his book:
