Hi guys

I woke up at 7.5 this morning which is high for me, especially when I went to bed at 6.4.

All I had for breakfast was some sugar free jelly and now 2hrs later I'm at 9.4. How?! I am very baffled as I feel slightly hypo

Any suggestions would be great 🙂

Megan, your blood sugar can rise even when you don't eat carbs due to your liver releasing stores of glucose into your blood. This is something it has to do in order to keep your heart, lungs, digestive system and brain working when you are not supplying them with energy from food. Unfortunately, and this happens especially in the mornings, sometimes it releases a bit too much glucose and raises your levels above range. For a non-diabetic this wouldn't be a problem as the pancreas would react by releasing insulin to keep things in order - for us it doesn't.

Usually a small amount of protein for breakfast will 'switch' off this liver process (or at least stop it sufficiently!) - it would seem that your sugar-free jelly did not, so you might need to experiment. How about a poached or scrambled egg?

I'll have a go with some different stuff then. Although I can't stand eggs 🙂
