Two years ago, Diane Gray had a catalogue of health problems brought on by her weight.

At 5 ft 3 in tall and weighing more than 22 st, her size was causing complaints, such as sores, a collapsed ankle joint, an overactive thyroid and high blood pressure.

She’d needed three operations in four years on her ankle, which had to be repeatedly pinned — where metal pins are inserted to hold the bones together — because it kept collapsing partly due to her weight.
